Water Y-Connector
"Don't get sprayed in the face"
Use a Y-Connector for your water supplies.  By doing so, when you want to unhook your main water supplies to the camper, you can turn the water supply off, open up the opposite side than the hose coming to your camper.  That releases the pressure, and when you now go to unhook the water on your camper, IT DOES NOT SPRAY YOU IN THE FACE! LoL
Black Water
ALWAYS leave your black water closed until time to dump (and close it back up after you dump)!  The more water the better.  If you leave your Black Water Open, the waste will pile up, all the liquid will drain off, and then you end up completely stopping your system up with solidified waste!
GUIDANCE: Run around 2 gallons of water into your Black Water tank after each time you dump it.

GUIDANCE: Pour a cup of fabric softener into the Black Water tank every now and then (especially when you are traveling).  The softener coats the inside of the tank so that waste materials do not stick as easy.  Right before you are about to travel, empty the Black Water tank, wash it out, put around 2-3 gallons of water and a cup of fabric softener.  While you are driving, that will wash the tank out and coat it.

Guidance:

Black Water Tank
  • Rule #1 (& THE MOST IMPORTANT) Always leave your black water tank close unless you are dumping
  • Rule #2 Water in your black water tank is your friend (always good to run extra water in there)
  • After dumping, run around 2 gallons of water into the blackwater tank (you want to have water already in the tank before you start using again)
  • Treat your blackwater tank with with enzyme treatment for bacteria (place in after each dump adding to the couple of gallons of water)
  • Learn you usage and tank capacity, and get a schedule of dumping 2 to 3 times a week such as (Mon, Wed, Fri).  Just make sure you dump regularly (if you schedule certain days, it is easy to remember)
  • Fill your toilet with extra water before you use it
  • Clean/Flush your blackwater tank after around each 5 dumps
    • If you have a blackwater flush system, let it run for 15-20 minutes
    • If you do not have a blackwater flush, use a wand down in the toilet, and make sure you rotate it around.  Also, let this run for 15-20 minutes
  • Get a clear sew line adapter somewhere, so that you can see that the water has started to run clear
NOTE:  Just dumping the blackwater tank will not get rid of everything, you have to rountinely flush/clean it

NOTE:  You can add ice to your blackwater tank to help clean while you are traveling that may help to break up deposited materials
Grey Water
Leave your Grey Water open when you are at your campsite and hooked up to public sewer system.  That way you can wash dishes, take showers, wash hands, brush teeth, etc. any time you want.

NOTE: ALWAYS leave your Grey Water open if you have a washer (except one time before you use Grey Water to flush hoses).  If you don't, can cause pressure build up in the pipes which can lead to a not so good time and potential damage to the plumbing.

GUIDANACE: The day before you plan on moving and emptying your black water, close the grey water and let the grey water tank store water.  You can then dump the Black Water.  Close it back off.  Then open the Grey Water to wash/flush the sewer hose out.  This is wonderful if you have a washer, as the detergent and good smell wash the hose out (only do this one time so you don't build up pressure from washer flushing water out).  Much better then for smell and storing the hose for transport.

Guidance:

Grey Water Tank
  • Rule #1 Complelely limit the amount of grease that you put down the drain
    • wipe grease out with a papertowel and put in the garbage before washing
  • Realize that everything from your sinks, tubs/showers goes into the grey wate tank
  • Use enzyme based dish soap
  • Do not use anti-bacterial cleaners in you sinks and tubs/showers
  • Also use bacterial enzyme cleaners in your grey water (pour down each of your drains prior to dumping)
  • Use an enzyme based dish soap
  • If you have sewer hook-up leave your grey water open
    • Place a J Trap in the line (this will keep smells from coming back up from the sewer system into you camper through the sinks and tubs)
Safety Chains
DO NOT unhook the safety chains from your trailer until you have it completely leveled and stabilized!  Having the chains on is the "Save You" insurance just in case the trailer were to start rolling (exspecially backwards).

RV Awning (always put in/retract when you leave)
When you leave your camper/motorhome, put your awning in.  You never know when wind or a rain storm will come up and when you get back, looks like this!

(Yes, this is one of our older travel trailers coming back from a very quick 15 minute trip to Walmart.  School of hard knocks)
GUIDANCE
If you have the ability, leave one end of the awning lower than the other (this will not allow water to buid up and damage your awning from the weight)

You can use items such as 5 gallon bucket filled with water on each end to hold down your awning and supply support for windy situations
