It Is Never Too Late To Change Your Future!

2023 Blog

12/31/2023
That's all folks
Finishing off 2023 with a camel ride. This concludes 2023. See y'all in 2024.
12/30/2023
A day on the beach
And a night at the beach bar, Baja Brewing, overlooking the beach, ocean and a colorful sunset.
12/29/2023
Only in Cabo
Where you book a catamaran and you end up on a sailboat.
Thank goodness the ocean was good to me and not too choppy.
12/28/2023
Glass boat tour
And we're off to the arch on a glass boat.
12/27/2023
Within reach
It's all within a walking distance of the resort, beach, wildlife, restaurants. Now if only the resort will get us some hot water for a shower, please...
12/26/2023
Resort #3
A most interesting place, great location but boy, with a lot of challenges.
12/25/2023
So cute
Our balcony faces the back of the manger, and all morning we've wondered if Baby Jesus had arrived. It was a happy moment to see he'd been put in the crib.
MERRY CHRISTMAS. HE IS THE REASON FOR THE SEASON!
12/24/2023
Christmas eve
The view almost makes me forget, but still missing family like crazy.
12/23/2023
The resort
We've made it to the all inc resort. What a treat, what a view.
12/22/2023
The Cactus Inn
The only thing we could get on short notice before checking into the all inc resort.
12/21/2023
A vacay to remember
Approaching Cabo San Lucas.
12/18/2023
Evening walks
On the historic Railroad trail.
12/16/2023
Hi!
The wildlife is out soaking up the sunshine too!
12/16/2023
Lake time
While others fill the malls around the country, we choose a cheaper, more peaceful and spiritual  approach at Bonnelli Bay, pull up a chair, it won't disappoint!
12/12/2023
Drive-thru lights
At the Las Vegas Speedway, it's a festive winter wonder holiday bonanza that will sure spark your holiday mood. I'm pretty sure I'm ready to put up our little Christmas tree tomorrow.
12/11/2023
Back at the rig
The wildlife awaits our return. Probably just waking for us to turn the water back on so they can catch a stray drop out of the hose. Ha.
12/10/2023
Navajo National Monument
This National Monument is located within the northwest portion of the Navajo Nation erritory in northern Arizona. Only one of the three cliff dwellings is viewable from across the canyon at this time.
12/10/2023
Betatakin cliff dwellings
They can only be viewed from across the canyon. It's a short hike, a bit snow covered but pretty easy to navigate.
12/10/2023
'House Built on a Ledge'
That is what Betatakin means. It consisted of about 120 rooms at the time of abandonment. Constructed of sandstone, mud, mortar and wood. Only about 80 rooms remain today due to rock falls inside the alcove.
12/9/2023
Canyon de Chelly National Monument
As usual, stopping at the visitor center first, watch a movie and as luck has it, there is a ranger led hike today and they have room for us both. Yay!
12/9/2023
Ranger led hike
We didn't know what we were getting into but this was the most strenuous hike we've done in a while.
12/9/2023
The story
At the end of our hike into the canyon, we arrive at this huge wall that tells a story, it's amazing and we all just stand in awe.
12/9/2023
Cliff dwellings
We've seen close to 10 different cliff dwellings this weekend and that is just a fraction of what is out there in this canyon. Mind blowing.
12/9/2023
Last stop
At Canyon de Chelly. It's been a perfect sunny day at the canyon but as soon as the sun goes down, we're right around 17 degrees, so we're heading back to the hotel for some warm food.
12/8/2023 part 1
Hubble Trading Post NHS
A new experience for us, we've have never been to a trading post before.

As always, the Visotor's Center provides a wealth of info and a movie to catch us up.

12/8/2023 part 2
Hubble Trading Post NHS
The squeaky wooden floors greet our entry into the oldest operating Trading Post on the Navajo Nation. You'll find you've just entered a mercantile. Hubbell's in Ganado has been selling goods and trading Native American Art since 1878.
12/3/2023 part 1
The Gold Strike Hot Springs Trail
Be in the parking lot early as it fills up quick. It's a very popular trail, strenuous but differently beautiful. 5.3 miles in length, 1,013 foot elevation change, according to AllTrails, so bring plenty of water and maybe a snack can't hurt.
12/3/2023 part 2
Cars in the canyon
Not sure how they got here or what the story is behind the scene but sure is interesting and not the only old artifact in the canyon..
12/3/2023 part 3
Ropes
This one-of-a-kind route features eight fixed roper if you go to the river. Challenging going down, even more so coming up.
12/3/2023 part 4
More ropes
Using the rope and walking backwards down what seems like a crack between boulders.
12/3/2023 part 5
The Hot Springs
After clearing all the obstacles, we arrive at the Upper Goldstrike Hot Springs, barely deep enough to sit in, but we pass. Recent reports of fecal matter in other springs make the thought of soaking in this not appealing.
12/3/2023 part 6
End of the trail...
...for us anyways. I have an injured arm from slipping on a rope and we've only passed 5 rope descents. The 6th rope seems more than I'm confident in handling. So we take a break, regroup, eat a protein bar and head back. Knowing our limits, still enjoying the day and coming back another day, that's ulitimately the goal and we've had a fabulous day ou in the canyon!
12/2/2023
By the lake
So many coves and trails to explore at LMNRA. The NV and AZ side offer plenty of that.
12/1/2023
New glass
For the Jeep and a clear view out he windshield for us. Whew, what a relief and it took all but 30 minutes!
11/30/2023
Those gnomes
Guess it's that time of year to put out all the Xmas decor.

Giddy up gnomies! Ha!!!

11/29/2023
LMNRA
Lake Mead Marina. Another mindful morning walk.
11/28/2023
Good morning
Morning walk, walk with thought, thought for purpose, Purpose in life, live.
11/26/2023 part 1
Don't feed 'em!
Because this is what happens when they do get fed, they loiter and beg.
11/26/2023 part 2
Across the street
From the Oasis resort, is a different oasis, this beautiful old structure, not sure what it's used for, maybe a wedding venue?
11/26/2023 part 3
The Mesquite Flat Sand Dunes
Check out how small the people look at the top.
11/26/2023 part 4
The climb
It looked so easy from the parking lot, but that climb and slide back, climb and slide back.

Ha!
11/26/2023 part 5
Moon rising
Death Valley just doesn't want to let us go. Farewell, so long, Auf Wiederseh'n!
11/26/2023 part 6
Meanwhile,
back in Vegas, we grab a bite to eat at Hot N Juicy.
They have the best shrimp and other seafood in a bag, you chose how spicy you can handle it.

11/25/2023 part 1
Ashford Mill Ruins
Located off Badwater Road, 45 some odd miles from Furnace Creek and the Oasis resort, the crumbling ruins of the Ashford Mine are a fun place to explore.
11/25/2023 part 2
Lake Manly
The last appearance of this lake was in 2005 and is now back after historic rainfall in the fall of 2023 due to Hurricane Hilary. In the middle of Badwater Basin the lowest and hottest place on Earth, that's what we really came to see.  What a sight.
11/24/2023 part 1
Back and gone again
Yesterday, we arrived back in Vegas and back at the rig, enough time to unpack and repack and head out to Death Valley National Park.
11/24/2023 part 2
The Oasis
A true gem among the Historic Landmarks. The Four-Diamond Inn at Death Valley, an elegant hideaway since 1927, the historic Inn has been a AAA-rated four -diamond resort for more than 37 and still pampers every guest.
Set against the hillside, the exclusive and private resort looks out over the valley toward the Panamint Mountains. Natural springs run through the completely renovated hotel, featuring new casitas, a spring fed pool and elegant dining.
11/24/2023 part 3
Thanksgiving dinner
Except it's the day after Thanksgiving and it's not turkey, it's fish :) And it was delicious.
11/23/2023
Bis später
See you soon, Stuttgart.
11/22/2023
Dad's birthday
Today we celebrated dad's 84th birthday, but we also had to pack our bags and head for the Stuttgart airport hotel as our plane leaves early in the morning. Going home is always bitter sweet. As dad said last year just before our train pulled out of the station, "It just never gets any easier". And you're right dad, it just doesn't.
11/20/2023
Dad spotted it
As dad gets up from an after lunch nap, he alerts us to look out he 2nd floor bedroom for a look at the gorgeous rainbow over the old church downtown.
It's incredibly beautiful and we're thankful dad woke up just in time to alert us. They never last long, these beauties.

11/19/2023
Route change
The bridge closing forces us to take a different running route, through Grossaltdorf, past the church where my grandparents renewed their wedding vows on their 50th anniversary.

Sweet memories choke me up, such special memories when I was just 10 maybe 11 years old.

11/15/2023
Post lunch walk
A new bench was installed at the Kernerturm, overlooking Gaildorf. What a view to take in. Chilly but beautiful.
11/13/2023
Calamity
They've closed our favorite covered bridge for repairs. Glad we got to cross it at least a view times on our morning runs. Looks like it'll be a while.
11/12/2023
Graffiti
But is it, or is it art? In the eyes of the beholder. I love the butterflies.
11/8/2023
3 days late
But never mind, this is our little anniversary getaway. A seafood sampler and a pizza to share.

Downtown Schwäbisch Hall never disappoints.
11/7/2023
My hometown
That view never gets old and that's why we're out early for a morning run/walk.
11/5/2023
The visitor
It's mom & dad's neighbor's cat, he visits often and lengthily. He eats, naps and looks for pettings. He's a good boy and we love to see him visit.
11/4/2023
The things we find
On our morning runs. Amazing and thankful our legs carry us.
11/3/2023
Breakfast
We run, we pick up eggs and stop at the bakery for fresh bread. Mom's got the coffee waiting. Goooooood morning!
11/2/2023
The last leg
It takes car, planes and a train to get to mom and dad's house, but we've almost made it!
11/1/2023
Parked...
Tagged and ready to fly. Heading home.
10/28/2023
Gambel's Quail
They run around all over the campground. I love hearing and seeing them, they are the funniest bunch that comes around looking for fallen seeds from the bird feeder.

Oh my heart, mom and baby Marmot, they are like shadows of each other, moving almost in perfect harmony. They whistle across the hills, communicating with other Marmots. It almost makes us forget the clouds rolling in an before long visibility becomes terrible, so we call it a day.

Basic, primitive, no running water, only one outlet and we're using it to heat the place because temperatures are dropping fast.

Wow
Sunset anyone?

Back to Seattle
Back to reality, back to running without the grandpups.

The Cog Railway
The easy way up, via Manitou and Pikes Peak Cog Railway. This National Historic Mechanical Engineering Landmark allows for anyone to get to the summit as long as one can handle the altitude.
9/16/2023 part 2
The ride
The narrator does a fantastic job at pointing out the noteworthy sights and wildlife along the way. The scenic ride to the top is just around and hour.
9/16/2023 part 3
Pikes Peak
Sure glad we didn't have to walk up this 14,115 footer! It's sun and beautiful and we watch participants of a half marathon finish at the summit! They're all winners in my book.

The cutest visitor at the pool, I think she enjoyed her outside time as much as we did.
9/5/2023  part 1
Rocky Mountain National Park
Still in recovery status, so no big hikes for us,  a mile around Bear Lake is just the right amount of exercise today.

Hi friend!
A little visitor, he came in so fast and I had to struggle to get this pic while sitting at the rig watching TV, without getting him upset and taking a chanc that he/she/it would spray us. He was courteous and nobody was harmed.
8/1/2023 part 1
Our ride
One must carefully plan this visit. Reservations sell out fast in the summer months, plan ahead! This is a sought after spot.
8/1/2023 part 2
Our destination
Yes! Alcatraz! One of my bucket list places!!! I'm so excited!!!

Plan carefully, the timed entry is something to consider. Unfortunately we were not lucky enough to get in, but limited parking is available outside the gates, just need to be there early enough and willing to hike in. Let's go then!

The pro
The Naturalist onboard our vessel took this pic. (I'm not taking credit for this shot, therefore the black border)
7/15/2023 part 3
My shot
Let me just say, this shot I took, in between swells rocking our little boat. I've never been so sick on a boat as on this ride, even ended up spending the rest of the excursion huddled down on my seat, not getting up for any other humpback or seal sightings.
7/15/2023 part 4

Luckily the wait for a table was pretty long, allowing me and my stomach to settle down for this yummy meal.

Evening walk
Along the beach, this curious beauty turns up out of the ocean almost next to me, stays through a couple of good strong waves, then, effortlessly slips back into the ocean.
7/12/2023 part 1
So tired
This is my morning run scenery. The sidewalk along the Pacific Grove is right on the ocean. This is also the lazy audience on my morning run. ;)
7/12/2023 part 2
Our evening excursion takes us to the scenic 17-Mile Drive through Pebble Beach, first stop the highly touted 18-hole coastline public golf course, Pebble Beach Golf Links where the PGA Tour just finished playing a couple days ago.
7/12/2023 part 3

The Lone Cypress

The Lone, single cypress tree overlooks the Pacific Ocean, it's been called one of the most photographed trees in North America. You can view this iconic tree located off the famous 17-Mile-Drive, from a wooded distance, or from a fenced viewpoint.
It is estimated that the tree was seeded in 1750.

Mission San Luis Obispo
Founded September 1, 1772, Mission San Luis Obispo. Like other churches, the main nave is short and narrow, but at the San Luis Obispo Mission, there is a secondary nave of almost equal size situated to the right of the altar , making it the only L-shaped mission church in California.

Mission Soledad
The mission was founded by the Franciscan order on October 9, 1791 to convert the Native Americans living in the area to Catholicism. It was the thirteenth of California's Spanish missions, and is named for Mary, Our Lady of Solitude. The town of Soledad is named for the mission.

Mission San Antonio de Padua
Mission San Antonio de Padua was the third Mission to be founded in Alta California, and was located along the very earliest routing of the Camino Real. This mission was located on a site which was unfortunately somewhat remote from the more reliable water source of what later became known as the Salinas River.

 Mission San Miguel Arcangel
Mission San Miguel Arcángel was established on July 25, 1797 by the Franciscan order, on a site chosen specifically due to the large number of Salinas Indians that inhabited the area, whom the Spanish priests wanted to evangelize.

Point San Luis Light Station
Founded in 1890, the Point San Luis Light Station has served as the beacon over San Luis Bay for 130 years. The Coast Guard still maintains a light at the station, an active Vega VLB 44-2.5 light, which blinks one second on/four seconds off, every night, and is visible up to 17 miles away. The rest of the station is operated as a historic site open to visitors who can reach the property by riding a shuttle bus to the gated property. Reservations are highly recommended..
7/1/2023 part 2
The fog signal
Located in one of the adjacent buildings, its space was converted into a small museum and gift store where you can watch a short video of the lighthouse history.
7/1/2023 part 3
The lens
First lit on June 30th, 1890, the Fourth Order Fresnel lens has a range of 17 nautical miles out to sea and would generate alternate red and white flashes of light every 30 seconds.

In 1969 the Fresnel lens was retired and is currently on display in a building on the grounds.

The lens was replaced by an automated electric light and in 1974 the Coast Guard decommissioned the light station.

7/1/2023 part 4
Mersea's
Mersea's, on the Hartford Pier, that's what locals recommended. So we make our way out there to the restaurant.
7/1/2023 part 5
Otter
He's playing around in the water just off the pier, so cute to watch.
7/1/2023 part 6
Gulls
Seagulls are everywhere, watching our every move, this one has a front row seat at the fish cleaning station.
7/1/2023 part 7
Food food food
Arriving at Mersea's, fresh seafood is wha'ts on the menu. Check them out if you're in that neck of the woods. The wait to order may be a bit longer on the weekends but so worth it.
7/1/2023 part 8
The best for last
Finally time for this deliscous lunch/dinner and a brew. Derek secured this fabulous corner spot on the patio above the ocean. Below us is a seal hollering at walkers by, the seagulls are circling for scraps that never come (at least not from us) and dogs are serenely laying below the tables keeping an eye out on the rambunctious kids running circles. It's been an interesting day exploring the lighthouse and the bay.
6/25/2023 part 1
Sundays
Especially sunny Sunday's are for scenic drives and hikes. This is just 10 miles from our campsite. Colorful wine country.
6/25/2023 part 2
A quick selfie
And we're off to the visitor's center to watch a movie about Pinnacles National Park, collect a cancellation stamp for the Parks book and hit the trail.
6/25/2023 part 3
Circling
To find a parking space, is what we had to do to secure a parking space at this trailhead. It's clear why the trail is so popular. Views for miles. The High Peaks Trail.
6/25/2023 part 4
 The High Peaks Trail
This is a fun part of the trail, climbing across huge boulders. Hand rails are in just the right spots and much appreciated.
6/25/2023 part 5
Along the way
I'm im awh about the huge prickly pine cones on the ground around the huge pine trees..
6/25/2023 part 6

About to go through the tunnel.
6/25/2023 part 7
Exiting the tunnel
Boy was it nice and cool in there. Refreshed, we hike on.

6/25/2023 part 10
Landscape
It changes around every corner.
6/25/2023 part 11
Unique
Some 23 million years ago multiple volcanoes erupted, flowed, and slid to form what would become Pinnacles National Park.
6/25/2023 part 12
Travelers
It's a journey through chaparral, oak woodlands, and canyon bottoms, emerging to towering rock spires teeming with life.
6/25/2023 part 13
More climbing
Thank goodness for the hand support and staircases chiseled into the side of the rocks.

6/25/2023 part 14
Stargazing
I imagine this would be a great spot to sit in the middle of the night and do some stargazing on a clear night. But for now, it's gonna be our lunch spot, taking in the scenery while eating our wraps and rehydrating.
6/25/2023 part 15
Down we go
At least for a little while.
6/25/2023 part 16
Sandy trail
Generally considered a highly challenging route, mainly because of the elevation gain of 1,800 feet, but the trail condition is actually really good. Be sure to bring lots of water, a hat and sunscreen. There was hardly any breeze in between the rocks and sun exposure was at a least 80% of the trail.
6/25/2023 part 17
California Condor
The highlight of the hike was finally getting to a California Condor soaring, high above our heads. The trail is known to bird watchers, peregrine falcons, golden eagles and of course the inspiring California Condor  have been seen at this spot. What an experience at the end of this hot and challenging hike.
6/24/2023 part 1
Moving day
It's that time again, goodbye Paso Robles, a short drive and hello Yanks RV Resort in Greenfield, California.
6/24/2023 part 2
The new spot
It's another good one, spacious, maintained, but why is it so windy here?
6/23/2023
Wine country
We're in the middle of it, and this is only our second wine tasting we go to. But it is one of our favorites, so far the best Port and Petite Syrah.
6/20/2023 part 1
Back to the beach
Back to Piedras Blancas Lighthouse. Another tour, another view, this time with lots of sun.
6/20/2023 part 2
A different angle
At the recommendation of a volunteer at the lighthouse tour, I venture a different direction once the 2 hours at the lighthouse if over. Boy, he wasn't kidding, this is the best view of the white, rock, the lighthouse and the water tower.
6/20/2023 part 3
Watching elephant seals
Playing in the bay. They are so fun to watch. I could sit here for a bit, so I do. Soaking in the moment.
6/20/2023 part 4
Cambria
Last stop, to see the Piedras Blancas Lighthouse Lens. This is were it is safely stored. Until, maybe, it will be taken back to the lighthouse?
6/18/2023 part 1
Sensorio
A flyer in the RV park office, that's how we found this interesting, fairly new attraction to the area. Can't wait for the sun to go down.
6/18/2023 part 2
Field of Light
We're getting ready to immerse ourselves into this outdoor exhibit.
6/18/2023 part 3
A million
Twinkling lights, they give the stars in the sky some competition.
It's very beautiful to watch while contemporary music plays softly in the background.
6/18/2023 part 4
Light Towers in full glow
Bottles make up these columns, I'd like to be part of the build, curiosity is killing me on how they built this. So many questions.
6/18/2023 part 5
Jellyfish
Is what this reminds me of. The light breeze moves the stands of lights. This was such a neat experience.
6/17/2023 part 1
Big noses, big personalities
San Simeon is the place to experience the elephant seals, on the beach sunning, or in the bay, swimming, they are so fun to observe.
6/17/2023 part 2
Reservations needed
There's no getting past the fenced entry to this lighthouse unless you come prepared, make reservations and be ready to meet the Park Ranger at an old abandoned Motel, then drive in a caravan to the lighthouse parking area. This was a very unique experience and we'd do it again in a heartbeat, so go check it out, you'll love it!
6/17/2023 part 3

6/17/2023 part 4
Piedras Blancas
The White Rock, hmm.

Yea, so that would be a lot of bird poop on that rock, therefore the naming.

There are hundreds of seagulls, cormorants and pelicans, even seals on this rock. We're told there are peregrine falcons nesting in the cave on the lower right. We see the falcons circling the lighthouse later on, so very memorable.
And how about those wildflowers, a sea of yellowthat makes a colorful foreground and smells beautiful. I could sit here a while.
6/17/2023 part 5
A different angle
Note the big bell on the bottom left below the tree, visitor's are allowed to ring it, if you dare. It's extremely loud!

6/17/2023 part 6
Climbing?
Not climbable.

But we love it anyways. What is it about lighthouses that makes me want to see them all, travel for miles, even hundreds to see them. There's a story that goes with each lighthouse, I think that's my obsession. The history and lifes that inspired the lighthouse keepers and their families.
6/17/2023 part 7
Wake up Enzo
He loves the Jeep and doesn't mind waiting while we explore. The weather was perfect and no chance of him getting too hot in the vehicle.
6/17/2023 part 8
Highway 1
We leave the lighthouse and it's time to pull into every turnout along the way, heaging North to photograph the scenery.
6/17/2023 part 9
Scenic Drive
It's foggy and windy but we head out to drive Highway 1, northbound.
6/17/2023 part 10
 Color explosion
Not sure what these are but they sure add some pop to the scenery.
6/17/2023 part 11
Landslide
This is the end of the road for now, we drove about 38 miles of this scenic route before we have to turn around.
6/16/2023
Good neighbors
A little wine tasting on a Friday after work within walking distance from the RV park. Enjoyed the samples and complimentary charcuterie board.
6/13/2023
Oh Enzo
In the sun, out in our doggie run but he gets himself into a situation no matter what. Haha. No animals or humans were hurt during production, he actually did enjoy the sun very much!
6/11/2023 part 1
Elephant Seals
They hang out on San Simeon Beach and there are plenty of them, big, small, every color and pattern. It's interesting to see them interact with eachother.
6/11/2023 part 2
Lunch
Next stop Hearst Castle, and we have plenty of time before out tour starts to enjoy a delicious lunch, pulled pork for me, Cheeseburger for Derek.
6/11/2023 part 3
The Hearst Castle tour
Our knowlegable guide, she provides endless facts and stories about the builder, owners, visitors and history of the house and property.
6/11/2023 part 4
The Hearst Castle tour
Hearst Castle, known formally as La Cuesta Encantada (Spanish for "The Enchanted Hill"), is a historic estate in San Simeon, located on the Central Coast of California.
6/11/2023 part 5
The Hearst Castle tour
George Hearst, William Randolph Hearst's father, had purchased the original 40,000-acre (162 km2) estate in 1865 and Camp Hill, the site for the future Hearst Castle, was used for family camping vacations during Hearst's youth.  The estate, built to be "something a little more comfortable up on the hill", the genesis of the present castle.
6/11/2023 part 6
The Hearst Castle tour
In the Roaring 20s and 1930s, Hearst Castle reached its social peak. Originally intended to be a family home for Hearst, by 1925 elaborate parties included a guest list included many of the Hollywood stars of the period; Charlie Chaplin, Cary Grant, Greta Garbo, Clark Gable all visited, some on multiple occasions. Political luminaries encompassed Winston Churchill while other notables included Charles Lindbergh and Bernard Shaw.
6/10/2023 part 1
Wine country
It is so beautiful here and the temperatures feel good. Not too hot, not too cold. I think we'll like it here.
           6/10/2023 part 2
New spot
New view, hello Paso Robles.
6/8/2023 part 1
Take 2
Solo trip to Anacapa Island. In the sunshine. The dolphins show up quickly, jumping and enjoying the sunshine as everybody on the boat.
6/8/2023 part 2
Anacapa Island
This trip is a bit different as we don't dock and get to walk on the island. But we circle the island more extensively.
6/8/2023 part 3
Anacapa Island Lighthouse
Even the lighthouse is in the sunlight today and it absolutely shines.
6/8/2023 part 4
More animal encounters
Back on shore, I explore the opposite shoreline to find these beauties basking in the sun.
6/5/2023
The other Visitor Center
For those who can't make the trip to one of the islands, there's always the Channel Islands Visitor Center south of Ventura. It's a beautiful facility, has a very good movie about the park's history and many exhibits, including a saltwater tank with many indigenous fish, even a lobster.
6/4/2023 part 1
Goofing off
Waiting for the ferry to pick us up. So we goof off like kids do.
  6/4/2023 part 2
All aboard
A short wait, a safety briefing and we board the ferry to Anacapa Island. It doesn't take very long before we see our first dolphins. The ferry operator slows down and the Naturalist onboard lets us really experience the wildlife. Just magnificent.
6/4/2023 part 3
Arch Rock
Approaching Anacapa Island, we pass the famous Arch Rock. The sky is grey and dreary looking but we've had a good calm ferry ride to the island.
6/4/2023 part 4
Welcome
What a different approach and entrance to a National Park. We climb the staircase and are given a short but thorough briefing about what we're about to experience.
6/4/2023 part 5
The stars of the day
They told us we would see Western Seagulls along the trails, well, we were not prepared for Western Seagulls all over the place and literally ON the trails, nesting!
These creatures are so fragile, so incredible, so beautiful, but also fierce and protective. As a mum, I can relate. So we keep telling the mums, you go girl, keep those eggs/babies warm. You're doing a great job!
6/4/2023 part 6
The real stars
We see them in every size, shape, color. In the nest, emerging from eggs (note the beak coming out of the egg), tucked in beside mum, darting through the brush. The babies are adorable and smart, they run into the bushes quickly to get away from the tall visitors. Mums did a great job teaching them to survive.
6/4/2023 part 7
Hiking
The island isn't very big so we're able to hike the entire island, including the Anacapa Island Lighthouse. We've taken plenty of picture breaks and soaked in the beauty of this rugged area. It's a bit bitter sweet to have to leave, I'd love to spend more time with the seagulls, they have my heart.

There are primitive campsites for campers wanting to spend multiple days here. That's what we need to plan on during nesting season one year.

6/3/2023
Moving day
See ya Desert Hot Springs, hello Ventura California. Wow, check out this spot. The campground recently flooded, their clubhouse burnt down, so not all amenities such as pool, workout room, laundry facility were available and we still paid full price but the location was in a fairly safe area and the site itself was impeccable.
6/2/2023 part 1
The Living Desert Zoo and Gardens
The first exhibit, the welcome committee.
"Hello, hi, come on in. Take a look around, meet my friends, enjoy!"
6/2/2023 part 2
The Living Desert Zoo and Gardens
I've always wanted to see a live Kokaburra. Kookaburras are terrestrial tree kingfishers of the genus Dacelo native to Australia and New Guinea,

The Living Desert Zoo and Gardens
Aren't giraffes always goofy? This one has a thing going on with it's tongue, continuously sticking it out, he's a showstopper. Kids and adult alike stop and watch.
Other giraffes come up to a platform where you can feed them lettuce leaves.
6/2/2023 part 9
The Living Desert Zoo and Gardens
Beautiful flowers, flowering bushes, and trees line the path towards the exit of the zoo. Wish I had more time to explore but they do close kind of early, I'm sure even if they'd been open longer, the rising temperatures would've ran me off soon.
6/2/2023 part 10
The Living Desert Zoo and Gardens
The barrel cacti are blooming beautifully  at the entrance/exit to the zoo.
6/1/2023
Gigantic arachnid
Another roadside attraction just within the city limit, VW Spider Sculpture in front of a closed down Palm Springs welding shop.
5/31/2023 part 1
Walk of Stars
The Palm Springs 'Walk of Stars' is a walk of fame in downtown Palm Springs, California, honoring various people who have lived in the greater Palm Springs area. Embedded in the sidewalk pavement are presidents, rock stars, supermodels, and actors, there's hundred's of them all over the town.
5/31/2023 part 2
Car plunge
A 1970s car was balanced as if about to plunge hood-first into a puddle of water, located just outside of the Palm Springs Art Museum.

5/31/2023 part 3
Forever Marilyn
26 feet of Marilyn Monroe sculpture that is.

This statue has certainly been around, from Chicago, to Trenton NJ, someplace in Australia, then Stamford Connecticut to now Palm Springs.

And Derek is having a little fun with this :)

5/31/2023 part 4
Yummy
A giant cake sculpture is right around the corner from the giant Marilyn statue.

Apparently, things are bigger in Palm Springs.
5/31/2023 part 5
Stout, Burgers & Beers
A little brew testing and some brew curb. It was all very delicious and this spot in the shade was nice too.
5/28/2023 part 1
Joshua Tree National Park
First place to start is the Visitor Center, not just to grab a map, a stamp and a sticker, but to get valuable info on possible trail closures, heat warnings, a short documentary about the park and maybe even availability of Ranger led hikes.
The Rangers know their parks and can offer answers to many questions and a wealth of useful information, give them a try.
5/28/2023 part 2
Joshua Tree National Park
Spotted this raven eating a snake on a Joshua Tree. Guess this the Great Outdoors. Survival of the fittest.
5/28/2023 part 3
Joshua Tree National Park
Joshua trees take many different forms. Sometimes they are full and bushy, other times spindly in their overall shape.
5/28/2023 part 4
Joshua Tree National Park
Enzo got to come along and take a little walk among these prickly oddities.
5/28/2023 part 5
Joshua Tree National Park
Skull Rock, a favorite stop for park visitors, we do too. Erosion has been hard at work here for a very long time but it resembles a skull perfectly.
5/28/2023 part 6
Joshua Tree National Park
The remainder of a Teddy Bear Cholla cactus trunk. It turns into a wodden interesting looking stumps.
5/28/2023 part 7
Joshua Tree National Park
And there are the live and well Teddy Bear Chollas. They look so soft and fuzzy but be not fooled by their looks, they are tough as nails. They can withstand an air temperature of 138 degrees Fahrenheit. Most other plants would literally cook at those temperatures.
5/28/2023 part 8
Cottonwood Visitor Center
Joshua Tree National Park comes to an end as we pull into the Cotttonwood Visitor Center at the other side of the park. Visitor Center is closed so we head back to the rig.
5/27/2023 part 1
Saying bye to Vegas
It's promising to be another 100 plus day in Vegas, a good time to get out of here.
5/27/2023  part 2
Mojave National Preserve
Just a little detour to Johave National Preserve. We get to the park sign and as I check their website, I see 'temporarily closed', wait what?
Sure enough, closed, due to power outage and Visitor Center has no power. Well, we tried.
5/27/2023  part 3
Arrived in Desert Springs, California

Still in the desert and windy as all getout, but finally out of Vegas.
5/24/2023
Time to pick up our lil' Boo
We can never tell if Enzo's happy to see us or just glad to receive treats but we sure are elated to have our little man back. The good people at Dam Dog House in Boulder City are the best dog caretakers ever, Allison and her husband are a gem.
5/23/2023 part 1
Good morning
Our morning greeting committee awaits on the balcony as we sip our coffee and take in the ocean view. Last days of vacations always suck but this is a slap in the face, LOL.
5/23/2023 part 2
This pair
They show up every morning. Juvenile (brown head) is screaming for food, parent (red head) is scrambling for food to feed the juvenile. We'd watch them for hours, but they move on for better feeding areas.
5/23/2023 part 3
Last chance
....for a coffee on the balcony. It's gonna be difficult to unsee this morning view.
5/23/2023 part 4
 Views
The view is great, the ocean is dishing out some awesome waves but the wind is brutal. We're content with this view from afar, from just below the parking area.
5/23/2023 part 5
The close-up
The Nakalele Blowhole eventually shoots water between lava formations. People hoot and holler, it's quite commical and we wonder if they should really be that close to the blowhole. Warning signs are posted along the trail, but you know how people roll.
5/23/2023 part 6
Don't feed 'em
We stop at a pull-out for landscape pictures and here' comes a rooster.
5/23/2023 part 7
That's why
We don't feed the wildlife. They get so desensitized and approach humans without fear. This feller was standing next to a rock face and couldn't move. We stopped, Derek got out of the car and walked back to get him. Carried home up the street where about 5 other chickens and roosters met us. A product of humans feeding animals when they shouldn't. We left hi\m in a safe spot, hopefully he will have a better chance of survival there than hunkered down next to a rock wall. Please, PLEASE, PLEEEEEASE do not feed animals along the streets, trails, wherever. Like so many signs in the National Parks say 'a fed bear (or any other wildlife) is a dead bear (or any other wildlife)'.
5/23/2023 part 8
Downtown Lahaina
Supporting the local retailers before we leave the island. We only brought one suitcase to share, so souvenirs are limited, but that's ok, the memories are in our brains and in our pictures and that's all we really need.
5/23/2023 part 9
But first...
Gelato. OMG, so many flavors, so many choices. But I will only fit one on that cone!
5/23/2023 part 10
M-m-m
Refreshing, cool, filling but not too much. It hit the spot. White fish and kale salad.
 5/23/2023 part 11
Look at the fishy
Mahi for Derek. You wanna know how good it was? He didn't even share with me, hahaha.
5/23/2023 part 12
Oh the brews!
Refreshing, hoppy, Waikiki brews!
5/23/2023 part 13
Aloha and Auf Wiedersehen
Maui, Hawaii, it's been a blast, thank you for letting us experience your beauty!
5/22/2023 part 1
Hawai'i Volcanoes NP
Born of fire, born of the sea. Hawai'i Volcanoes NP protects some of the most unique geological, biological, and cherished cultural landscapes in the world. (Little did we know that) in June, a brief, but intense 13-day eruption illuminated the night sky with towering lava fountains and a lake of incandescent lava.    ~NPS
5/22/2023 part 2
Steam vents
You can feel the heat rising from the steam vents, they are located at the Kilauea Overlook parking area.
5/22/2023 part 3
Kilauea
The summit caldera of Kilauea was reshaped in 2018. A loss in pressure caused the summit to collapse. Halema'uma'u crater sank an astounding 1,600 feet in to the earth.
5/22/2023 part 4
Vegetation
There seems to be an abundance of shrubs, trees, and ferns growing on the surrounding the fertile ground.
5/22/2023 part 5
Wildflowers
Plenty of colorful, wild orchids, other indigenous shrubs, flowers, and huge ferns are growing along the walkways and boardwalks.

5/22/2023 part 6
Sulfur Banks Boardwalk
We take a short hike, Sulphur Banks Boardwalk to Sulphur Banks Trail. Once again, you can feel the heat escaping the steam vents, and the sulphur smell, well you know, it's not the most pleasant, but the colorful mineral deposits make for a colorful landscape.
5/22/2023 part 7
Luamanu Crater
This is just one of the many craters along the scenic Crater Rim drive to Chain of Craters road. Craters, rocks, and lava flow formations line the road.
Luamanu Crater translated means bird crater.
5/22/2023 part 8
Lava Flow
In July of 1974, a volcanic fissure opened to the east of Luamanu, filling Luamanu crater with about 50 feet of red not lava. It later later drained back into a fissure.
After spending the morning at the National Park, we head back.
5/22/2023 part 9
Time to pack
We head back to Kilauea Lodge to gather our bags and explore the beautifully manicured grounds. Then we head to breakfast in the main dining area with a very unique fireplace which showcases nearly 100 "Aloha" stones from YMCAs, Rotary, Lions and Y's Men's Clubs, National Parks, churches and friends in 32 countries.
5/22/2023 part 10
Breakfast
It's not a huge menu selection, but it sure is delicious.
I ordered the Eggs Benedict with Canadian bacon.

Derek ordered the Classic Egg Breakfast and a side of French Toast made with Portuguese sweet bread.

And plenty of coffee for both of us.

Adjacent to the dining room is a small convenience store with little trinkets and gifts.
This was such a great little find and we'd definitely stay longer.
5/22/2023  part 11
Pheasants
These two ran around in the front yard and finally stopped to pose for me. Don't they look like two love birds?
5/22/2023 part 12
Yellow hibiscus
The native yellow hibiscus, also know as the Pua Aloalo or Ma`o-hau-hele, is established and designated as the official flower of the State. They are so vibrant and colorful and are growing all over the front yard of the lodge.
5/22/2023 part 13
Ferns
They seem to grow everywhere and they come in all shapes and sizes. Mostly supersized, this one was at least 4 feet taller than me.
5/22/2023 part 14
Our rental ride
Theres our cute little rental car in front of the lodge and the room we stayed in on the bottom left.
5/22/2023 part 15
Meanwhile, back in Hilo
A different kind of ride awaits us. Thanks to Derek making reservations, Blue Hawaiian Helicopters is going to show us the island from above.
5/22/2023 part 16
Lava flow
Heading to and into the Pacific Ocean. The green between all the lava rock stands out like sore thumb, and the clear waters of the ocean are such a color contrast..
5/22/2023 part 17
Mauna Ulu
Another lava flow coming from Mauna Ulu, this lava bed is visible even on Google Maps.
5/22/2023 part 18
Road thru lava beds
Hard to imagine what these lava beds do to the infrastructure and how life comes to a halt when these eruptions occur.
5/22/2023 part 19
Pua'ialua Crater
Flying over this crater feels surreal.
5/22/2023 part 20
Circling around
Back to Hilo, this was a super flight with a knowledgeable pilot who knew the island inside out. He made it fun, interesting and educational.
5/22/2023 part 21
Roadside attractions
A gold enrobed statue of the Hawaiian ruler who conquered the islands by 1810. King Kamehameha The Great.
5/22/2023 part 22
Tsunami Clock of Doom
Also on the Roadside Attractions app. This clock froze at 1:04 marks the early morning moment in 1960 when a wave destroyed most of downtown Hilo. The clock survived the 1946 killer tsunami.
5/22/2023 part 23
Those trees
Hard to describe how big this one was, but it was huge. I'd guess 50 feet tall?
5/22/2023 part 24
Ponds, Hilo
The chopper pilot reommended this establishment, glad we listened, not only is the view out over a pond, but the wildlife in the pond is abundant.
5/22/2023 part 25
Loggerhead
He/she was eating along the bank for almost as long as we were eating dinner. It was amazing to be able to watch it eat.
 5/21/2023 part 1
Island Hopping
Once again, we're up before the rooster and off to the airport. Maui to Honolulu to the Big Island.
5/21/2023 part 2
The Big Island
The Island of Hawaii, Hilo International airport that is!
So far, the Big Island has the smallest and easiest to maneuver airport. We quickly grab our rental car and off we go.
5/21/2023 part 3
But first...
...a late lunch, this local resort restaurant, Hula Hula, cooks up a mean Ahi Tuna Steak. Perfect with bacon and avocado.
5/21/2023 part 4
And the view
Located next to the ocean. It's not shabby either.
5/21/2023 part 5
Rainbow Falls
We explore a little of downtown Hilo but want to move on. Our next stop, Rainbow Falls at Wailuku River State Park. It is conveniently located off the road en route to our resort. A quick walk and some sets of stairs to an overlook to this pretty waterfall, where, on sunny days a rainbow can be observed. Not today though, it actually starts to rain on us while there.
5/21/2023 part 6
How about another
Not even 2 miles up the road is waterfall number two. The Boiling Pots, another short hike but this time we pull out the raincoats. Rain is getting heavier.
5/21/2023 part 7
Kilauea Lodge and Restaurant
That's where we'll be staying for the night. Come on in, let me show you around.
5/21/2023 part 8

Our Room
It's located in a freestanding building and has a total of 4 rooms, a common room with TV, access to outside seating areas and walking path. Everything is super cute, clean, and welcoming. There is no air conditioner, but it's very windy and cool. Natural air conditioning.
5/21/2023 part 9
The Hottub
And a wonderful hottub, which we'll be using later, to relax and unwind while listening to the rain poor down.
5/21/2023 part 10
Hawaii Vocanoes National Park
Bags are dropped off at the resort and we take a 10 minute drive to Hawaii Volcanoes NP. By the time we arrive, the Visitor's Center is already closed.
5/21/2023 part 11
Journey inside an active volcano
The Thurston Lava Tube (Nahuku). We talk through the tropical rain forest area in the rain and with flashlights until we reach the subterranean cave formed by ancient lava flow. The lighting is pretty cool too. But even cooler are the frogs having a serenade in the rain. What a neat experience. It's been a long day, and we're gladly heading back to the resort to warm up in the hottub.
5/20/2023 part 1
Day trip to Honolulu, Oahu
The great part about the islands is that flights are reasonably priced and flight time is short. Maui to Oahu took us about 55 minutes.
We're ready to explore.
5/20/2023 part 2
The Pearl Harbor National Memorial
The memorial is a 'place of remembrance and contemplation of the nature of war and sacrifices of those who lost their lives during the Pacific War. Prior reservations are highly recommended. Making this a multi day trip to see all the memorable places is even better. We only have a day, so we'll be moving about quickly and explore the two places of most importance to us.
5/20/2023 part 3
Sailor kisses Nurse
In case you didn't know, it's been named the 'Unconditional Surrender' statue.

This life sized statue was placed just before you enter the steps to go up to the Battleship Missouri.

5/20/2023 part 4
Battleship Missouri Memorial
The "Mighty Mo", the USS Missouri, now known as Battleship MIssouri Memorial, is the site where the Japanese signed the surrender documents that ended World War 2 on September 2, 1945.

The ship is now a museum and a memorial to the war's conclusion. It is open daily from 8:00 to 16:00. Tours are either self guided at your own pace or guided by knowledgeable curators to share information about the history of the 51 year long career of the ship.

Launched from the Naval Shipyard in Brooklyn in 1944, USS Missouri served through WW2, the Korean War, and the Gulf War. In 1992, the battleship was decommissioned for a final time.
In 1998, she opened her water-tight doors again as a historic museum.
5/20/2023 part 5
A place for work
Funny to see the, what was then, the most advanced technology.
5/20/2023 part 6
A place to eat
This must've been one of the gathering spots on the ship for sailors to take a break, grab a snack and enjoy relaxing with other crew members. .
5/20/2023 part 7
A place to send and receive
Yes, a USPS office onboard the ship, how cool is that!?
5/20/2023 part 8
USS Arizona Memorial
We take a short shuttle ride to the memorial. It is a somber place, marking the resting place of 1,102 of the 1,177 sailors and Marines killed on USS Arizona during the attack on Pearl Harbo Ron December 7, 1941.
5/20/2023 part 9
Nico's Pier 38
By recommendation, we take an Uber to this seafood restaurant and it did not disappoint. The seafood was fabulously fresh.
5/20/2023 part 10
Waiting for the flight back
He takes two, I take one, massage chair go arounds before we get on the plain.
Perfect way to relax before getting on the plane.
5/20/2023 part 11
No sleep on this flight
It's time to watch that awesome sunset.
5/19/2023
R&R
A day of relaxing&recovering, Writing, reading, snorkeling and watching the boats go by.

    5/18/2023 part 1
The morning view
Breakfast on the balcony with a view. I could stay here forever.
5/18/2023 part 2
Visitors
They scan the property for crumbs. The dude on the left is the baby begging mom for food.
5/18/2023 part 3
The property
Well maintained and pretty to look at.
5/18/2023 part 4
Beach accesss
Beach and views for miles, easy access to snorkeling too and plenty of lounge chairs available for sun bathing.
5/18/2023 part 5
Exploring the island
One of the sought after spots for diving and snorkeling.
5/18/2023 part 6
Many stops
Along the drive, around every corner, there are plenty of picture ops and pullouts to do so safely and even have a quick picnic with a wonderful view..
5/18/2023 part 7
Banana bread
Made from scratch papaya butter. We couldn't resist, it's super delicious. These little stands are scattered along the roadside all over the island.
5/18/2023 part 8
The roads
They're pretty windy and skinny and before long, we end up on a single lane dirt road. Luckily only passenger cars come at us.
5/18/2023 part 9
Haleakala NP
The one hour drive takes us about two and a half. Plenty of stops for photos, banana bread and more photos. No regrets.
5/18/2023 part 10
House of the sun
A great observation point at an elevation of 10,023 feet.
5/18/2023 part 11
Volcanic Panorama
The view from this dormant volcano is partially covered with clouds and before we leave, most of the mountains across from the observation deck is covered up.
5/18/2023 part 12
'Eke
The seemingly barren landscape hosts many rare forms of life. The 'eke (silversword) is endemic to the West Maui mountains and found nowhere else in the world.
5/18/2023 part 13
Chukar
A Native to Asia and in the pheasant family. It seems to thrive on Maui.
5/18/2023 part 14
NeNe Crossing
Aka the Hawaiian goose, and official state bird, endemic to the Hawaiian Islands. We looked far and wide but never got to see one.
5/18/2023 part 15
Ferns
Every color and size, wonderfully beautiful.
5/18/2023 part 16
Pheasants
Foraging along the side of the road. They're so colorful and pretty to watch as they pick at the long grass and skim bugs or water off?
5/18/2023 part 17
Last but not least...
The roosters are everywhere, much like Key West, they run free. This one was shaking and fluffing his feathers to show off. Ha!
5/17/2023 part 1
Happy Birthday to me!
Hello Hawaii, nice to finally meet you!
5/17/2023 part 2
Road out of the airport
Can't wait to see the island. first impression? The hibiscus bloom wild and they're colorful, fragrant and everywhere.
 5/17/2023 part 3
Birthday drinks at Duke's
Fruity drinks with and without umbrellas is on the menu to celebrate.
This beachside eatery is part of a resort and has phenomenal reviews.
5/17/2023 part 4
Fish Tacos
For Derek, they are fresh, juicy and seasoned just right.
5/17/2023 part 5
Fish sandwich
For me, it's equally delicious and hits the spot.
5/17/2023 part 6
Selfies
Many are taken as we drive along the ocean, the road is right along the ocea and viwes of he surrounding islands are spectacular.
5/17/2023 part 7
Trees
A natural canopy, the huge trees line the roads and provide shade from the hot afternoon sun.
5/17/2023 part 8
This will be our view
For the next 6 days. The living room wall is made up of glass windows and doors that open the room up 2/3 of the length of the glass.
5/17/2023 part 9
The bedroom
A kingsize bed, off the main hallway, a full bathroom, a large kitchen with an island and a living room with a dining table and couches. It's more than enough for us!
5/17/2023 part 10

5/14/2023 part 1
Great Basin National Park
The truth is, we did a sneak preview of Great Basin National Park when we rolled into Baker Nevada yesterday evening. So here we go. We give you Great Basin NP, Nevada.
5/14/2023 part 2
Visitor Center
The visitor center and gift shop are already closed, but we'll be back tomorrow.
5/14/2023 part 3
Cave tour
One of the tourist attractions at Great Basin National Park are caves and the ranger-lead guided tours of 2 historic caves. We were able to pre-order our Lehman Caves tour online at recreation.gov. Walk ins are possible but you're not guaranteed a spot. The tour was spectacular and the ranger explained the history, geology and ecology in a caring, educational and interesting way.
5/14/2023 part 4
Breakfast
Adjacent to the gift shop and visitor center is the Great Basin Cafe. Which has a wonderful selection of breakfast foods. We've worked up an appetite on our cave tour and  chose to split the avocado toast and the Breakfast Burrito. Fresh cooked breakfast, Happy Mother's Day to me!
5/14/2023 part 5
Great Basin wildlife
Because we have a 5 hour drive ahead of us, we leave shortly after breakfast, going on a couple short off-road Jeep trails and finally head out to Strawberry Creek trail. This trail goes on for about 5 miles from the main road and leads through a large portion of burnt area, lightning strike was the cause back in 2016. We spot a herd of mule deer climbing the mountainside. They're not impressed and move on quickly.
5/14/2023 part 6
End of the trail
A sign in the road informs us that this is the end of the trail. Massive snow and ice still covers the Jeep trail. We're just glad we got to enjoy at least 5 miles of this beautiful area. And Derek takes the opportunity to hike across this field to play in the snow.
5/14/2023 part 7
GodBe Mill
This old silver-ore processing mill located in Pioche Nevada, pops up on the Roadside Attractions app. So we take a quick detour. Although the property is fenced and displays a no trespassing sign, we can still take pictures from the road.
5/14/2023 part 8
Miller Point at Cathedral Gorge
This 2000 acre state park offers walking trails, picnic areas, camping and more. A great spot to take our late lunch and sit at one of the covered picnic areas. The views into the gorge are colorful sandstone rock formations. We hike down some stairs and get a closer look. This would be neat hike and explore but we need to head back.
5/14/2023 part 9
Enzo in the backseat
He seems to be enjoying the ride and had a great time eating lunch with us. He's still lethargic from the meds but we're glad he's doing ok, tagging along with us and at times looking out the window, smelling the fresh air.
5/13/2023 part 1
Road-trip
On a long straight road to somewhere.
5/13/2023 part 2
Joshua trees as far as the eye can see. How beautiful is this?!
5/13/2023 part 3
Pahranagat National Wildlife Refuge. Another oasis in the desert with a cancellation stamp for the parks book, yay.
5/13/2023 part 4
Water from a spring and channels to make use of the water.
5/13/2023 part 5
Cottonwood trees, they're big and beautiful and the shade they provide is fantastic.
5/13/2023 part 6
Not much to look at on the outside, but this is where we're staying tonight. In a little town named Baker, Nevada.
5/13/2023 part 7
But look at the inside, newly remodeled, it still smells brand new. The Whispering Elms Motel and campground.
5/13/2023 part 8
Small town, small options? Not here, this is the best tasting food we've had in a while. Sugar, Salt & Malt for the win to finish out a fabulous travel day.
5/6/2023
It's a dirty job
But somebody has to do it. We checked into a professional wash/wax but found out they charged $500-$600. Blew our mind, so we'll do it ourselves. If we spend $500-$600, it's gonna be on an airline ticket so somewhere. It took us one day to wash and start the waxing on Saturday, then finished the remaining 3 sides of the rig waxing on Sunday. Glad it's done and she sure shines again.
4/29/2023 part 1
Desert oasis
The Clark County Wetlands Park spans 2,900 acres on the eastern edge of the Las Vegas Valley. With a 210-acre Nature Preserve and five Trailheads, the Park provides recreation opportunities and wildlife habitat as well as an outdoor classroom for scientific studies and educational programs for all ages.
4/29/2023 part 2
It's not too long after we start on the 2 mile outer loop, when we spot a roadrunner hunting for dinner.
These birds are so fun to watch and we walk along the drainage ditch in which he's walking.
4/29/2023 part 3
View from the Big Weir Bridge, down to the Las Vegas Wash. We spot some Moorhens and mallards in the water. It looks so green and lush compared to the desert surrounding us, but disheartening how polluted this entire area is.
4/29/2023 part 4
There are several small ponds in the park. On a warm sunny day you can watch the turtles bask in the sun.
4/29/2023 part 5
You'll find rabbits under the bushes and even along the paved trail, laying down in the sand or foraging on small plants. Most are cautiously curious and watch as we stroll by.
4/29/2023 part 6
The Kingsnake, it slithered out between the rocks, allowed us a couple of photos, then went on it's way. I would've never known what kind of snake this was, Derek knows his snakes though, all I could do was take the picture then check the eyes on the back of the camera closeup, yup, round eyes, no danger.
4/28/2023 part 1
Home again
Our sweet boy is home and hungry as a horse, which is polar opposite of pre seizure Enzo. We treat him to a scoop of peanut butter which he devours quickly. It's good to have him home.
4/28/2023 part 2
Time in the shade
The Boulder City park is one of the greenest and groomed places in this town, located just across the street from the post office. After picking up mail from our PO Box, we park ourselves in a nice spot under a tree and enjoy the cool breeze.
4/27/2023
Our hearts are breaking
Our sweet senior, Enzo, had a massive seizure this afternoon. A thorough exam at our vet is followed by a night of observation at the Animal Hospital. He had no more seizures overnight and is discharged tomorrow morning. Heavily medicated, we bring him home and begin our journey with yet another seizure dog. Only time will tell if he adjusts well to the meds that are supposed to keep him from another seizure.
4/26/2023
SOLD!
Just like that, it's gone. It's a bit of a relief because we only have 4 weeks before we really start hitting the road again. We couldn't pass up a fantastic offer. Happy trails little Z!
4/23/2023 part 1
Moving out
Moving days are emotional for me, this move is especially bittersweet, partly because where ever  we go, we find beauty within our new surroundings. If you look closely, yes, even in the middle of the Mojave desert. Our stay at Lake Mead RV Village started September 2022, the longest we've ever parked the rig in one spot. We fully took advantage of getting to know the desert, the wildlife, and especially the Spring superbloom. But it's time to move on. Even if it is just 25 miles down the road. Gonna miss the evening bird and rabbit watches.
Auf Wiedersehen, for now!
4/23/2023 part 2
Moving in
Arrival at Las Vegas RV Resort is uneventful and setup goes smooth. Well, almost, when we realize that the water hose won't reach the spigot, we bring the slides back in and reposition the rig and voila.
This spot is on the side end of the property, a premium spot gives a bit more of a buffer in proximity to the neighbors than other sites. Not too bad for downtown Las Vegas, Nevada.
4/22/2022 part 1
A Sunday Paddle
Two people inflating one kayak is a breeze and we're all set up to hit the water within 15 minutes.
4/22/2022 part 2
The ramp at Willow Beach
A super wide paved boat ramp allows kayakers, SUPs and boats to put in. Check out all the vessels floating on the Colorado River. It's a beautiful afternoon to be on the water.
Per the NPS, artifacts were found along the Colorado River indicating that this might have been a prehistoric trading center.
4/22/2022 part 3
Time to discover
Just past the Willow Beach Fish Hatchery, the river opens up, we lose many of the boats and kayaks as  they explore the banks and trails along the river. But before long, the river is once again surrounded by steep canyon walls. We spot some Rams coming down one of the canyons, too far for the camera to capture but beautiful to watch.
4/22/2022 part 4
Mining operations?
We have yet to find any official info on what this once was. But on both sides of this cart on a rope, we see that it is connected to this...
4/22/2022 part 5
Catwalk
That looks interesting, about 50 feet above the water is this well preserved catwalk.
4/22/2022 part 6
Mine entrance
Across the Colorado River, we see the mine entrance. It's all boarded up now but also very well preserved.
I will edit this post if we are able to find out more details about the mining efforts in this area.
4/22/2022 part 7
Emerald Cave
Believe it or not, we paddled up and had to get in line to float into the cave. We got lucky, had six kayaks in front of us and a tour guide with a group of 12 kayaks behind us.
We floated in and it was slightly underwhelming, we had a picture of this grand cave but it was really low and small. Still pretty, the green water and sunshine made this trip very enjoyable.
4/22/2022 part 8
The rock formations
They don't look so big but they are huge. Some of the walls appear a good hundred feet tall.
4/22/2022 part 9
Spring in the desert
Some wildflowers are still in full bloom along the river and the bright pink cactus bloom are abundant.
These yellow beauties are shining in the sun!

4/22/2022 part 10
Wildlife
We encounter many ducks, cormorants and moorhens on the river. They're curious but most take a dive and disappear into the cool water.
4/22/2022 part 12
They've returned
We haven't seen the Boulder herd in quite a whi.e, but today, as we drive up to town for some dinner, we see them in the distance. We quickly turn down the drive to the park and take some pictures of these beauties, but they don't stay long. A couple good shots and they run off. Glad they waited for us to stop by.
4/21/2022 part 1
Lake Mead Fish Hatchery
For years and years we've been coming here, but we've never made it to the Fish Hatchery, so today, we make time for a visit.
It's most interesting to read about the history and the number of Rainbow Trout raised and released.
I especially love the old pictures.

4/21/2022 part 2
As of today
Sadly, the fish hatchery is dry and empty. No fish. The equipment is immaculately kept and the Volunteer at the facility tells us of plans for the fish hatchery to be reopened. No concrete dates have been released as of this writing.
4/21/2022 part 3
The locals
A nice sized fish tank in the Visitor's Center contains some of the local fish, Razorback sucker, Colorado Pikeminnow, Bonytail, and Humback chub.
4/20/2023
High 5
When 'things' become routine. I've been watching this beauty for the past 6 months, calling it my high 5 (count the buds on the left pad) buddy on my morning running route. It's finally getting ready to bloom. And this is my last run on the trail, sad to not get to see you completely shine my friend, but I imagine you're going to be shining like a star, it's been an honor to see you on my runs my friend.
4/16/2023 part 1
Eggs and bacon
It's wha'ts for breakfast.
Ok, add some dog food to the mix but you get my point.
Another delicious breakfast at camp.

4/16/2023 part 2
Ravens everywhere
They're like the cleanup crew of the desert? Watching our every move as we pack up camp. We pack in and pack out. Sorry Mr. Raven, no leftovers for you in our camp.
4/16/2023 part 3
Peregrine Falcon?
Above us circles a (?) sure looks like a Peregrine Falcon. I'm not a bird expert but looking at my bird book, sure looks like it, what do you think?
4/16/2023 part 4
Now this...
...I know for sure is a wild burro, and it too watches every move I make. I come any close with my 240mm lense and he starts to 'snort' and blow his nostrils at me. No worries may friend, I'm not getting any closer.
4/16/2023 part 5
Yuccas
Are blooming in the desert heat and looking gloriously beautiful.

4/16/2023 part 6
Close-ups
I don't just stop at the picture, I dive in, a close-up is a must and it doesn't disappoint. The red buds at the top are still opening.

4/16/2023 part 7
Ding ding ding, bonus captures!
You might think I'm hiking out to capture one thing (the beautiful Yucca blooms) but to my surprise I find more beauties by happenstance.
There's an abundance of Mojave Aster Blooms next to this Yucca, and although they won't reach anywhere near the Yucca's height, they can grow up to 30 inches high. This one is easy 36 inches in diameter. It is native to the Mojave desert and the whitish-green stems and purple to lavender rays surrounding a yellow disk are thriving out here and adding color to the otherwise barren desert.
4/16/2023 part 8
Great view
And another off shoot gravel, rock and sand road leads us down to Bonelli Landing at Lake Mead National Recreation Area, Arizona. The drive is rocky and sandy and while we see SUVs out there, I woudn't want to be in anything without 4x4. It's bright and pretty out there and a breeze off the lake makes the temperature feel at least 15-20 degrees cooler. This would be a neat spot to camp as well, but not as much privacy as the spot we were in. Because of the lake access, a lot of kayakers and SUPs are camped there.
4/16/2023 part 9
YOU'RE BEAUTIFUL
WISH I COULD TAKE YOU HOME!
4/16/2023 part 10
The Dillinger
The treat after coming out of the desert. Artichoke appetizer for the table, Chili and a sandwich for Derek, a big salad for me.

4/16/2023  part 11
The Dillinger
My big Chopped Salad, Romaine, iceberg, salami, chickpeas, turkey brest, diced tomatoes, Mozzarella, tossed in Mustard Parmesan Vinaigrette seasoning AND 'pro tip' add bacon, cuz bacon makes everything alright.

4/15/2023 part 1
The breakfast maker
You guessed correctly, it's eggs and bacon for breakfast!
4/15/2023 part 2
Essen kommen!!!
That's what my mom used to holler upstairs when a meal was ready.
Time to eat indeed. Doesn't that look yum yum, you'll have to take my word for it, it was indeed yum yum.
4/15/2023 part 3
Mmmmmmh, yea, that view
Not a thing in sight fo miles and miles. I could sit here and stare all day. Oh wait, we did! :)
4/15/2023 part 4
Uuuu-la-la, a siesta please!
In the desert, things are better in the shade, the sun is brutal and relentless. There are no trees to make shade, so we make our own. The bug bungalow, aka. screened porch, two tarps covering 2 of 4 sides, and the breeze cooling us off thru the other two open sides of the screened porch, we are feeling cool, calm, and comfy in the desert.
Well hi there, Derek, the photobomber. LOL.
4/15/2023 part 5
Almost twins
These two stop and stare, so did I. They mimicked eachother's every move. Just lovely white muzzles and fluffy soft looking ears. I'd love own a couple mules or donkeys if we had a farm.
I am absolutely smittened by the frequent visitor and the eaaaaawwwws are filling my heart.
Always up for adventure, I'm flooding my brain with ideas such as, I could stay out here and do my own burro studies, write a book about heir behavior in the wild, take a million pictures of burros, wildflowers, rocks and the lake. I mean I'm no expert but wouldn't me watching the wildlife for an extended amount of time kind of make me an expert? Then there's the cautiously paranoid me who talks myself out of it because summer is just around the corner, and who wants to be in the desert in temperatures over 100 degrees, in the shade, wait, what shade? Sigh. Aren't they lovely though? Maybe in the Fall? One can dream.
4/15/2023 part 6
The audience
The audience is growing, a flycatcher on a twig. Singing ever so beautifully for us. What rally surprises me is that the wildlife out here really is more curious than scared. We keep our distance though, keeping it wild, not disturbed, stay wild and free little feller!
4/15/2023 part 7
A peaceful spot
Well, let's revisit that statement. This place is desolate, abandoned, peaceful, Mekka, delightful, until these litte annoyances show up every 45 minutes, like clockwork. From just about 8am to 6ish pm. We've experienced clusters of 4-8 helicopter flying over.
They see us, they fly directly over us after they spot us, others veer off to the side. There's always the defiant one that has to pester people, like this one, probably just digging for a big tip from the tourists. Pffffff. This must be what the famous people feel like, chase by the paparazzi, and it's not fun.
4/15/2023 part 8
Fire is life
This is the spot that lets you leave all the troubles behind. The campfire.
We always haul in our own wood, after all, there is no dead wood out here to collect for a fire. Even if there were trees out here, we never cut down live trees. The aroma of the fire and heat on a 60 degree evening feels cozy. Of course this is where we must get out the s'mores. Good night y'all!
4/14/2023 part 1
Around the RV Park
Yellow flower stalks on aloe plants? Or is it a yucca? I've never seen anything like it. The entrance to our RV Park is a delightful display of desert beauties in bloom.
No wonder I'm late every morning getting my morning run started.
Distractions everywhere.

4/14/2023 part 2
Along the River Mountains Trail
More distractions, see what I mean, it would be a crime, in my book, to pass these beauties whitout taking at least one picture.

4/14/2023 part 3
Quickly
It's Friday and we're anxious to get out the door. Supplies are packed and before long, we're set up again at Bonnelli Bay. Enzo seems to enjoy the view, or is it the smells? The wild burros sure have left us some 'presents' since the last time we were here, they've even kicked in our fireplace, really? !

That's the honest truth!
4/14/2023 part 4
Curiosity
It's interesting to watch the burros.
All day long we see them walking about the area, stopping and staring curiously at us. Most of them graze a while, then eventually make their way down to the lake, which is about 3/4 of a mile from our campsite. We've seen more burros on this camping trip than on our last one. Daytime temperatures have gone up by about 20 degrees since our last overnight stay out here and I'm sure that's why more burros frequent the cool water of Lake Mead.
4/14/2023 part 5
Serenity
Although it's not terribly cold, the fire feels inviting. The nights do get cool in the desert but that should make for great sleeping tonight. Besides, camping wouldn't be the same without a fire. We sit for hours staring at the moon, looking for satellites and watching airplanes approach the Las Vegas International airport. It's the most peaceful enjoyable time of the day and that's what draws us into the wilderness.
4/13/2023 part 1
White Owl Canyon via 33 Hole
Check out this 3.8ish mile loop trail. Generally considered a challenging route, This trail is open year-round, however, wouldn't recommend hiking this in the middle of summer heat. Alway take plenty of water on this hike, no matter the season. Dogs are welcome but must be leashed.
4/13/2023 part 2
Uuuuuummmh
Yea, that's what it looks like when you take the wrong turn. Easy to do around here. There are no signs marking the trail. There are some rocks sometimes cairns marking the trail, be sure to look ahead to stay on track. Flash floods would carry the signs away even if they tried to mark these trails. Luckily we catch the correct trail at the other end at around mile 2, so we'll just be doing the down side of the canyon, not up and down.
4/13/2023 part 3
White Owl Canyon
White Owl Canyon is super narrow and then very high at times.
The entire trail is either small gravel or sand, we hiked this in Chaco's and Tevas, which lets the sand out easy but hiking boots with gators would work too. Whatever you're used to hiking in.

4/13/2023 part 4
White Owl Canyon
Sand Blazing Stars, these natives to the Mojave Desert are holding on, all over the side of the canyon, just beautifully blooming in masses at this time of year.

This is a much wider part of the canyon.
4/13/2023 part 5
The road
This trail cuts below the main road thru the National Recreation Area. Large 'tunnels' run below the road and we're traversing thru them to follow the trail.
4/13/2023 part 6
Stacked rocks
This is pretty cool, these rocks are stacked nicely. Wonder if the next big water rushing thru the canyon will take it down. I'm sure it's much sturdier than it looks but we're not gonna clime on it to find out it's not. Just gonna walk under it.
4/13/2023 part 7
Derek is pointing
Yep, that's where we hiked.
4/12/2023
Morning runs
Are refreshing and breathtaking at the same time. No, literally, breathtaking, the blooms are beautiful and I can hardly take in this scenery, but the pollen is taking a toll on me.
Nevermind, I'm still gonna get out there and enjoy the sun on my skin.

Now let's shuffle on and run a couple more miles.

4/9/2023 part 1
Willow Beach, AZ
As part of the Lake Mead National Recreation Area, Willow Beach on the Arizona side of the recreational area offers scenic lake shorelines, with canoe and boat rental, a campground and boat ramps to put in a kayak or canoe. Sounds like a perfect spot for a Sunday paddle date.
4/9/2023 part 2
Photo opps
Time to bring out the waterproof Olympus tough TG-5 for some underwater photos.
Practicing every chance I can get, I especially love these split captions and so far this is my best and favorite one.

Helps to have sunshine and clear water of course.
4/9/2023 part 3
Heron on the river bank
The great blue heron sunning and drying its feathers on the banks of the Colorado River. These long legged, long necked creatures can be found on the shores of open water. It's not much bothered by my presence and I'm trying to be quiet as to not disturb him/her but pretty soon it decides I'm just a bit too close and it moves further up the bank, thanks for the photo, pretty bird.
4/9/2023  part 4
The Colorado River
In most parts of Arizona, we've observed the Colorado River to be a not so appealing muddy brown color, not here though. With not much wind today, the water is calm and offers us a calm, easy paddle.
4/9/2023 part 5
A sweet couple
A couple of mallards followed us into different coves on several different occasions, I'm sure they are used to getting fed by people on the river, fishermen throwing things in the water, maybe kids feeding them. It's so hard not to because they are literally begging for food, but as the saying goes, a fed duck is a dead duck. Sorrry my friends!
4/9/2023 part 6
4 hours
Of paddle time on the Colorado, what a relaxing Sunday. Sun on th skin, 9not too much) wind in the hair, it's been a great day on the water.
4/5/2023
Showoffs ;)
Morning runs can, and will be, interrupted by beauties like this, every quarter mile, there's another one, showin off it's newest colors. And I fall for the, hook, line, and sinker.
What beauty there is to discover if we just pay attention and look, even in the driest of places.
4/4/2023
Procedures day and DFW to LAS
The procedures take place as planned and proceed smoothly.
We'll skip to post procedures and go straight to the fun part, after the 36 hour fast required for the procedures, it's time to ease back into eating. Papadeux's baked fish and shrimp minus the white rice sounded like a delicious idea before heading to the airport to fly back to Las Vegas, Nevada.
4/3/2023
LAS to DFW
The trip for medical care with my gastroenterologist in Dallas.
We have a 6:15am flight. Ugh! But there's hardly any traffic at 4:30 am!
Not pleasant but it needs to happen in hopes for
answers.
4/2/2023 part 1
Valley of Fire State Park, Nevada
We've made many trips to Valley of Fire State Park over the years but still have some trails left to explore.
This is the trailhead to the Mouse's Tank trail.
4/2/2023 part 2
Valley of Fire State Park, Nevada
Mouse’s Tank Trail in Valley of Fire State Park has two points of interest: petroglyphs and a small water hole. This is a short, about a mile, easy hike and worth the walk to see Petroglyph Canyon.
We love to stand and stare, imagine what the petroglyphs meant, we mostly make up stuff and have fun with it, but on a serious note, ancient history recorded in stone, how cool is that !?
4/2/2023 part 3
Valley of Fire State Park, Nevada
Mouse’s Tank Trail, second  point of interest: a small water hole. This is the spot where we are supposed to see a water hole. We didn't see anything. Must be dry at this point in time?

May have needed to look or climb further but didn't want to cross boundaries as this said end of trail.

4/2/2023 part 4
Valley of Fire State Park, Nevada
A little break, staring over the colorful rock formations. It's absolutely breathtaking, or is that the heat, haha. It is pretty hot and not much wind today but so worth the hike. Just come prepared and better have extra water as the temperatures rise, this is the desert after all!
4/2/2023 part 5
Valley of Fire State Park, Nevada
The wildlife is enjoying the sun as well. What a handsome feller or beautiful girl!
4/2/2023 part 6
Valley of Fire State Park, Nevada
Fire Wave and Pink Canyon via Seven Wonders Trail, often compared to the famous 'Wave' on National park lands which requires a lottery ticket, not this beauty though.
This hike ended up being just under 4 miles. We climbed around, sat, stared, enjoyed, rehydrated. Wow, what a beautiful trail, not just the colorful wave lines in the rocks, but the narrow slot canyons and washes. Extraordinarily created, courtesy of Mother Nature.
4/2/2023 part 7
Slater's 50/50
A burger and a brew.
Perfect day, perfect hike, perfect dinner.
4/1/2023 part 1
Not an April fools joke
We're about to bike 36ish miles today. We did this ride in 2020, on manual bikes, not e-bikes. So we're about to feel spoiled.
So we head to All Mountain Cyclery up in Boulder City and rent these e-bikes. A cruiser and a regular e-bike.
More on that shortly.

4/1/2023 part 2
The River Mountains Loop Trail
The River Mountains Loop Trail runs for more than 35 miles on a loop around the River Mountains, which form the backdrop of Las Vegas and Henderson. The trail is 12 feet wide and paved, with an adjacent trail for equestrians for about 15 miles of its length.
It's a perfect weather day for this and especially since part of the trail will be closed come Monday for maintenance. We're ready to tackle this trail once again.
4/1/2023 part 3
The bikes
Are not all created equal. Half way thru, Derek and I switch bikes. There were times when I pedaled like a wild woman while Derek coasted on the downhills.
Turns out the cruiser is by far the user friendlier bike which is really good info in case we decide to buy e-bikes in the future. Something about the motor on the 'Harley Davidson' slowing you down when you don't pedal versus the cruiser letting you coast.
Derek runs out of battery on the last 2 miles on the Harley Davidson bike. What a bummer. No worries though. Luckily the last mile back to the rental store is downhill. Woohoo!
4/1/2023 part 4
Refueling
Time to shower, pick up Enzo at the rig, and head to BJ's restaurant and Brewery to recharge.
3/31/2023
Beavertail blooms
There are so many Beavertail cacti along my running route and I get distracted by each one.
This gives me a chance to stop running and catch my breath and share these beauts with y'all.

3/29/2023
Morning workout and photo shoot
3 miles of walking up the hill, taking wildflower photos, then turning around and running downhill, back to the Jeep.
Gotta capture these tiny beauties before they're gone.
3/26/2023 part 1
Where Jeeps go
We are off to a quiet spot, brought lunch and a book and the Jeep to get us there.
3/26/2023 part 2
Here it is
Our spot for this afternoon. It's peaceful, quiet, and the only other traffic out here was acamper van on the trail that has now left.
Time to eat our lunch we brought and get to reading a book.

3/26/2023 part 3
Old Highway 93
We jump on this old gravel road and follow it quite a few miles, the wildflowers are popping here too.
3/26/2023 part 4
In the backseat
Enzo seems to have enjoyed the ride too. He's looking out the back window, even though his eyes continue to turn just a little cloudier every day, he sniffs and enjoyed the warmer weather today.
3/23/2023 part 1
The road to Willow Beach
Wildflowers galore! Every color, every size, the desert is on a roll!
3/23/2023 part 2
Willow Beach and Marina
Not just flowers but ducks are plenty in the marina.
3/22/2023
Daily wildflower report
Finding new pretties every day. But still no cactus flowers blooming.

3/21/2023
Anxiously waiting
For these beauties to bloom. Need just a little more time.
Our evening walk is relaxing and can't wait to see these lovely Beavertails shine!
3/19/2023 part 1
Wake up!
Our little sleepy-head had a good night in the tent, his very first tent experience with us.
Maybe the smell of eggs and bacon will get him up and motivated :)
3/19/2023 part 2
Simple breakfast
Eggs, bacon, cooked over the open fire, wrapped in a tortilla shell. And of course a little something something for our Enzo. Doesn't get much better. Now if the sun will just make an appearance, we'll be good to go!
Unfortunately rain/drizzle starts and we have to pack up anyways (sigh).
3/19/2023 part 3
The view from camp
Clouds and all, but still pretty and peaceful.
Ok, so the helicopters flying over all day weren't so cute, but for the most part our reading time and alone out in nature was very needed and appreciated..

3/19/2023 part 4
All packed up and ready to head back
Well, not really, we first explore one of the canyons and walk into this cavern, which I'm sure was under water not too long ago. It's so pretty, yet fragile, everything seems brittle and falling apart under my feet. There's so much to explore and discover, but not enough hours in the day.

Eventually we turn around and head back to the Jeep. Enzo has been a trooper, walking along with us this whole time.
3/18/2023
Meanwhile, at camp.
Saturday's night's are made for camp and fires and nature and not a care in the world except for watching for wild burros.
This'll be our camp for the night, a non disclosed remote area around Bonelli Bay. A peaceful spot, except for the helicopters doing their tours from and to Las Vegas.
3/17/2023
Keith!
Urban, that is! My Derek got us tickets to Keith Urban in Vegas!!! He played his heart out, what a show!!!
3/16/2023
 Still for sale
This beaut. No serious offers yet, taking more recent pics for advertising!
3/14/2023 part 1
Remember that time...
When we went for an evening walk, looking for cactus blooms, and I looked up and saw this airplane flying over and thought it looked different. Well turns out that Airforce One was flying over Lake Mead in approach of Las Vegas, and I just happened to catch it.
That was very cool.
3/14/2023 part 2
As for the cactus bloom
They are not quite ready yet. But when they are, they will be spectacular.
3/13/2023 part 1
A good spot
A good spot to stay in, and also where we stayed before taking the train to the Grand Canyon, this Holiday Inn Express is just a mile from the train station and very conveniently located within walking distance of the Brewery. After the train arrived in Williams, it was 6:30 pm and we decided to stay for the night instead of rushing back. Luckily they had a room available.
3/13/2023 part 2
Meanwhile
Around the RV Park, colors of Spring are everywhere.
3/12/2023 part 1
The Redbud
That's the building in which we stayed.
We had a good night's sleep and we leave our luggage in the room, the convenient thing is that everything will be picked up and put on the train.
Off to an early start we head out to catch the shuttle bus.
3/12/2023 part 2
The shuttle service
Very convenient when you arrive by train and have no rental car.
Just a short walk from our lodge, we're able to get on the bus for the 'red route' that will ultimately take us to Hermits Rest. There are different routes throughout the park that'll take you all over the park. The buses run about every 15 minutes.
3/12/2023 part 3
The weather
It sure has changed it's mind today and we're glad for that. The sleet, rain and wind from yesterday has made way for the sunshine. This couldn't have turned out any better as we decide to walk some of the shorter sections of this route instead of riding the bus the whole way.
3/12/2023 part 4
Views
For miles into the canyon. Every turn has us staring into the canyon, it doesn't matter how often we've been here, we still stop and stare.

The clouds cast shadows on the canyon, making the views ever changing.
3/12/2023 part 5
The Colors
There's just about every color in those rock formations and the blue and white clouds add so much to the whole picture. I could spend all day here and fill an entire SD card.
3/12/2023 part 6
The wildlife
Here's Derek the bird whisperer. This Scrub Jay was mimicking the direction Derek was looking in.
3/12/2023 part 7
The Bright Angel Trailhead
Spikes come out and on our boots, there's no way I'd get on the trail without them. The trail is covered in ice and snow.
3/12/2023 part 8
The Bright Angel Trail
There are areas with two inches of snow. And that's the reason why we put on the micro spikes.
3/12/2023 part 9
A short hike
We only go down about a half mile before we turn around but I'm so glad we got to be on the trail with the snow. This is why we came, to see experience the Grand Canyon covered in snow. A week later, I'm sure it would've been gone.
3/12/2023 part 10
Our ride
The ride back to Williams Arizona is sunny and and beautiful. But it's hard to leave, I see the mules in the coral and at the barn and I wish I could be on a mule going down the canyon. May have to play that lottery for a mule ride again.
What a perfect weekend.
3/11/2023 part 1
Holiday Inn Express
Holida Inn Express is our go-to when not in the RV. An early complementary breakfast and we're off to the train station.
3/11/2023 part 2
All aboard !
The train ride on the Grand Canyon Railway from Williams Arizona to the Grand Canyon is around 2.5 hours and so scenic and relaxing. This has been on our to do list for a while, so glad this is happening today.
3/11/2023 part 3
Hello beautiful!
Upon arrival at the Grand Canyon we do a quick check-in at the front desk and leave our carry-on in the room, all other luggage will be delivered from the train to our room. Now that's service. We take advantage of the time savings and head out on the complimentary bus to get to the South Kaibab trailhead and take off walking the rim trail towards the visitor's center, a welcomed 3 mile walk after all the sitting on the train. Oh those views with much of the recent snow still on the rim trail are unforgettable!
3/11/2023 part 4
Overlooks
We stop at every overlook and take pictures and goofy selfies.
3/11/2023 part 5
Oh where is the sunshine?
By the way, we did not plan for snow and sleet to get us on this trip, so we stopped at the store and picked up ponchos. A-hem, upon taking them out of the packaging we realized they were kiddie ponchos. Oh well, they still covered the upper body and didn't let the wind thru!
3/11/2023 part 6
Ever changing
That's what the weather is serving up as we wait for our very late lunch/early dinner. The sleet is really coming down and we're glad to be sitting in the warm restaurant.
3/11/2023 part 7
And here comes the food and brews
The Yavapai Tavern was one of our favorites last Fall when we spent 6 weeks here at the canyon. I've been looking forward to coming here for their Elk Melt. It was juicy delicious and everything I remembered it would be. Derek went with tacos and chili, just right for a cold rainy windy day like today.
3/11/2023 part 8
Maswik Lodge

Maswik Lodge building and adjacent hotel rooms are contemporary in style. The area, however, is rich cultural in history.
It's late when we return to our hotel but just a short walk from the bus stop, which is really convenient because there are no rental cars when we got off the train. Walking and bus is the only form of transportation for the weekend.

3/11/2023 part 9
Our room
Because off the late booking, we have to settle for 2 queen beds but it's a place to put our head down and rest.
3/10/2023 part 1
Welcome to Williams Arizona
Yay, roadtrip!
Williams Arizona is known for being the last city on Historic Route 66 to be bypassed by I-40. It thrives on tourism. It also offers unlimited recreational opportunities for outdoor enthusiasts.
The Historic Downtown District covers six square blocks, a little bit for everyone.
3/10/2023 part 2
The Cruiser's Cafe 66
Filled with old gas-station trinkets, this diner offers American staples & desserts. I imagine this place is hopping when the weather is nice enough to sit outside.
3/10/2023 part 3
Cars of the Mother Road
Although currently 'temporarily closed' I still thought their outdoor display was worth mentioning.
3/10/2023 part 4
Grand Canyon Brewery & Distillery
This relaxed, timber-clad stop offers burger, pizza, craft beers and spirits. Sounds good to us, so let's give it a try.
3/10/2023 part 5
A really warm welcome
This beauty greeted us right inside the big, bold wooden double entry doors.

3/10/2023 part 6
Wedge salad
For Martina, coming right up. It tasted light, refreshing, devine.
3/10/2023 part 7
Pizza for Derek
Hawaiian pizza, one of his favorites, he didn't complain and devoured about half, the other half to go.
3/10/2023 part 8
G.C. Spirits Flight
The brew are awesome but the vodkas are very awesome too. Well done Grand Canyon Brewing and Distillery. This is definitely well worth the stop and within walking distance to our hotel.
3/7/2023`
The Full Worm Moon
Don't ask me, I didn't name it.
According to Farmer's Almanace, there are quite a few names for the March Moon, that speak to the transition from winter to spring.
Anyways, this was early evening, around 7ish and it was pretty even with the cloud streaks photobombing the picture. ;)
3/5/2023 part 1
Sunday drive in the desert
Temple Bar, on the ARizona side of Lake Mead NRA, the other marina at the other side of Lake Mead NRA. It looks like a ghost town, is it the early Spring season or is it always this desolate here? The marina is way out due to water levels of the lake. A call for a shuttle is required to be taken out if you have a boats there. It's hard to imagine that where I took this picture from, is where the water was up to back in the 1980s and before.
3/5/2023 part 2
The wildlife
Wild burros everywhere. They are too curious and stop to take a look at what I'm doing. We stare at each other for at least 20 minutes before they decide I'm not interesting enough to stick around. Such beauties!
2/27/2023 part 1
Hoover Dam
We start the day out with a quick drive to and over Hoover Dam to the viewing platform on the other side of the Dam with the O'Callaghan Bridge in the background. Beautiful sunshine but gusty winds are making me think I would not want to stand on the dam or the bridge.
2/27/2023 part 2
M&M store
Brings a smile to your face, she's such a kid at heart, I love it!
          2/27/2023 part 3
                  For Derek
A burger and onion rings.
2/27/2023 part 4
Wings for Martina

Extra crispy and Buffalo sauce on the side, while Missy skips dinner. Travel nerves.
2/27/2023 part 5
The famous fabulous sign
Don't leave Vegas without at least one selfie at the famous fabulous Las Vegas sign. As Derek circles for a parking spot, we quickly snap a selfie and run to the car, off to the airport for Missy's late night flight back to Denver Colorado. See you soon my love!
2/26/2023 part 1
The trailhead
Another early morning, getting up and arriving at the trailhead with a permit was crucial.

Melissa applied for the daily lottery and secured us an entry.
All info we've received shows parking is very limited, yes even in the winter and on a snowy morning.

So lets get this hike started. But first, we step into our micro spikes and grab our trekking poles. There will be no slipping or sliding on this trail, no room for error.
2/26/2023 part 2
It's a winter wonderland
We are bundled up and head out of the parking lot, over the Virgin River bridge and on to the snowy and icy West Rim Trail.
2/26/2023 part 3
The views
Are breathtaking, around every turn, a new scene presents itself, we're not putting a lot of miles under our belt quickly, but that's why we started early.

And breaks are good, considering the 1,604 foot elevation gain  :)
2/26/2023 part 4
The switchbacks
We make our way up the switchbacks, photo opportunities at every stop.

2/26/2023 part 5
More switchbacks
Here they come, walking up the trail.

We've made it almost to the chains, the beginning of Angels Landing Trail.

Excitement is building!

2/26/2023 part 6
Angels Landing Trail
We arrive at Scout's Lookout.

The sign says it all, we'll be in for a strenuous climb.
2/26/2023 part 7
The chains
Derek in the background, walked up to the sign and immediately said "I'm out, I can't do this". His fear of heights is real and he knows when he's reached his limits.
The trail, or should we say climb, starts out ok fo rMissy and I, but the further we get up, the more our hands start slipping even with gloves.
I'm starting to question our decision. I can't get a good foot hold, even with microspikes. There is a half mile climb ahead of us. Derek keeps urging us to turn around, our safety in mind, we do.
I can see the disappointment on Melissa's face, I hate disappointing her,but we turn back. Doesn't seem to make any sense to risk our lives here. Things might be different without the snow, we don't know, but sure don't want to see anyone get hurt or killed.
2/26/2023 part 8
Sad faces
Disappointment is written all over our sad faces.
Before heading back down, we climb a short distance on Scout's Lookout Trail and look back at The Angels Landing Trail, we know we've made the right decision, it starts to snow and sleet again, and we turn back down the West Rim Trail.
We're once again thankful for our microspikes,
the downhill is no easier than the uphill was this
morning.

2/26/2023 part 9
Mount Carmel Tunnel
This long landmark tunnel cut through red sandstone cliffs is the gateway to Zion National Park, one of our favorites to drive. Even more beautiful as snow and sleet continues to fall, we drive the scenic Mount Carmel Highway. One more late lunch at the brewery and we are on our way back to Boulder City.
2/26/2023 part 10
A quick visit
At Valley of Fire State Park, we drive through and even get to see some rams climbing the red rock formations.
2/25/2023 part 1
Up before the chickens
Alarm goes off at 5am.
And up we are, dressing takes the longest, you'll see why shortly. And we're out the door by 6am.
2/25/2023 part 2
Early bird
Hardly anybody on the roads, good, that means we may could find a parking space at the trailhead. Crossing our fingers.
2/25/2023 part 3
Yesssssss!
Made it to the trailhead and we got parking secured. We've heard all sorts of stories about people renting gear and not being able to find parking and having to postpone their hike, we weren't going to take that chance, that's why we got up before the chickens. Now, to finish dressing ourselves, yes, those are dry suits. And you'll see what for in a minute.
2/25/2023 part 4
Ninja Missy ;)
Looks like My Missy is just a bit excited to take on this hike. Better save some of that energy though.

We're at Temple of Sinawava and are about to enter the trail via the Riverside Walk.
2/25/2023 part 5
The ice skating rink
What we didn't think of is that the rubber boots from the outfitters have no profile on the soles and we're slipping, sliding and falling all over the place. The micro spikes are in the hotel where they do us absolutely not good, but who knew!?
Derek and Melissa are goofing off in the snow making snow angels.
2/25/2023 part 6
A mile in
That's how far we hike/slip/slide before we get to the end of the trail and hit the water.
This is what we bundled up for, and that water is cold. I'm freaking out just a little bit because my biggest challenge when hiking or even running in the cold is to keep my fingers and toes warm. I have no idea what to expect as we enter The (famous) Narrows.
It sure is pretty though, we've been here in the summer and it's beautiful but the snow just adds another layer of beauty.
2/25/2023 part 7
The Narrows
It's hard to describe our surroundings. The rocks are huge, the icicles long, the water cold and deep in some areas.
We come across water runoff that looks like waterfalls on the rocks.
At times we hear a boom and see icicles and snow falling from above and hit the water.
The sun is peeking thru the earlier clouds and seems like snow around us is melting as temperature rise.
We take our time and enjoy the brakes because this sure is a once in a lifetime kind of hike. Water comes up to our knees and sometimes up to our hips, the current is very strong in some areas, it's hard at times to keep from getting my feet pulled out from under me.
2/25/2023 part 8
Group pic
Well, surprisingly now that our boots are filled with water, our feet stay warm while in the water. They do get colder as we come out of the water to walk around some fairly fast moving rapids. We run into hikers and we offer to take each others group pictures.
We're getting close to 'Wall Street', this part is where the walls keep getting closer much like in other dry slot canyons we've hiked.
Now let's get back in the water and warm those toes up.
2/25/2023 part 9
More Narrows
This is the reason why this hike is so popular, I'm sure more popular in the summertime, but the added snow is just absolutely spectacular.
This gorge, with walls a thousand feet tall and the river sometimes just twenty to thirty feet wide, is one of the most popular areas in Zion National Park. Wonder how long it would take us to thru-hike this 16 mile long, up to 1,000 feet deep, and at times only 30 feet wide gorge.
NPS~Walking in the shadow of soaring walls, sandstone grottos, natural springs, and hanging gardens can be an unforgettable wilderness experience. It is not, however, a trip to be underestimated. When hiking through the Virgin River Narrows, at least 80% of the route is spent wading, walking, and swimming sections of the river. There is no maintained trail; the river is the route. The river current is swift, the water is cold, and the rocks underfoot are slippery. Flash flooding and hypothermia are constant dangers. Good planning, proper equipment, and sound judgment are essential for a safe and successful trip.~NPS
2/25/2023 part 10
Missy the explorer
She's been a little trooper, pushing thru the Virgin River at The Narrows.
2/25/2023 part 11
When in doubt
Scoot it out, better than taking another fall and risking going head first into the water, smart girl my Missy. So far, I'm the only one who has managed to fall in twice. Luckily never fully submerged but one time sure could feel the water around my neck.
2/25/2023 part 12
The turn around
We later find out that we've hiked in about 4 miles from the trailhead. It's a tough call because around every boulder there's more new sights, but we're limited on time and have to return the rental gear by 5pm. It's a good time to turn around and hike out the 4 miles to the Jeep.
2/24/2023 part 1
Zion National Park
Sooooo, late last night, we picked up My Missy at the LAS airport, and early this morning we left Boulder City and drove to Springdale, Utah.
The last two days have been cold here and snow has fallen at Zion National Park, our final destination. According to locals, the most snow they've seen in decades.

We check into our hotel and head straight over to Zion outfitters to pick up our reserved gear.

Then a quick drive into Zion to check out trail conditions.
It looks so pretty with the snow and wildlife is out,
making the snow covered rock formations in the background
even prettier.
2/24/2023 part 2
Zion Canyon Brew Pub
This is our go-to place when in Zion, phenomenal food and brews.

We eat, drink, and return to the hotel with all our gear for an early start tomorrow morning.
2/19/2023 part 1
In the cove
Enjoying the sunshine but the wind is too much for Derek to get his little drone off the ground for more than a few seconds. Enzo is glad to be back home and outside too. I brought a book, and a lunch for all of us, just a relaxing Sunday on the lake.
2/19/2023 part 2
Wildlife blending in
Just across the lake, I see something moving just above the water line. This wild burro grazes on the rocks for quite some time, then just standing in the sunshine before moving on. Fun to watch these animals climb over the rocks so sure footed.
2/18/2023 part 1
Time to race
We arrived at the race parking at 5:15am to secure a parking space.

It'll be a long wait until start time at 7am, but this gives us enough time to catch up with some old Clarksville Tennessee running buddies and get prepared for the race.

Ready or not, here we go!

2/18/2023 part 2
5 miles in
The scenery is gorgeous, the weather is perfect and the cacti are huge. It's so beautiful and it's hard to stay focused on the route with these pretties all around us.
This is shortly before the course takes us from road to gravel and sand trails.
The last half of the race is brutal.
2/18/2023 part 3
Finish line
Hard race but we make it to the finish which is staged right inside the Old Tucson (formerly Old Tucson Studios), an American movie studio and theme park west of Tucson, AZ, adjacent to the Tucson Mountains, close to the western portion of Saguaro National Park. Built in 1939 for the movie Arizona (1940), it has been used for the filming location of many movies and TV westerns since then, such as Gunfight at the O.K. Corral (1957), Rio Bravo (1959), El Dorado (1966), Little House on the Prairie TV series of the 1970s–1980s, the film Three Amigos!
2/18/2023 part 4
Meet the stars
Stars of the petting zoo that is. This part of the Old Tucson is my favorite, not a care in the world, he was basking in the sun with no intention of moving any time soon. Sure enjoyed the scritches he received.
2/18/2023 part 5
The cutest
Must pet the donkey! This is Pazole, a mini donkey and he shares the pen with Snoopy the white park steer.
Pretty soon we head out and hit the road. Got miles to cover to get back to Boulder City, NV.
2/18/2023 part 6
Oh look!
Can we find National Monuments and Parks or what?! It's just a few minutes detour but so worth seeing.
2/18/2023 part 7
Casa Grande Ruins, Coolidge, AZ
Explore the history & stories of an extended network of communities & irrigation canals. An Ancestral Sonoran Desert People's farming community ("Great House") are preserved at Casa Grande Ruins. Whether the Casa Grande was a gathering place for the Desert People or simply a waypoint marker in an extensive system of canals and trading partners is but part of the story of the Ruins.
2/18/2023 part 8
Feathered residents
In the rafters of the National Monument, we discover two Great Horned Owls. What beautiful birds, just looking down over the ruins.
What a great day of racing, sightseeing, and exploring. It's time to get back to Boulder City now to pick up Enzo.
2/17/2023  part 1
Saguaro National Park
Yes indeed, another National Park, and a stamp in the parks book. Tucson, Arizona is home to the nation's largest cacti, the universal symbol of the American west. These majestic plants are protected by Saguaro National Park. Here you have a chance to see these enormous cacti.
2/17/2023  part 2
Saguaro Half Marathon
Packet pickup time for the Vacation Races Saguaro Half Marathon.
2/17/2023  part 3
San Xavier Mission
Not too much sightseeing before the race to keep our legs fresh for tomorrow, just a little trip to San Xavier Mission, the main part of the church is under major renovations and not accessible but the grounds and outside of the building are beautiful to see.
2/17/2023  part 4
Let's carb load
At Thunder Canyon Brewing, downtown Tucson Arizona.
2/17/2023  part 5
Dinner and brews
The pretzel sticks with beer cheese were delicious, at first I thought they looked kinda dry and tough, but they were actually super crispy and light and fluffy warm on the inside.
2/16/2023 part 1
Arizona roadtrip
Tucson that is.
And a pretty snazzy room at the Estrella at Casino  Del Sol. Now let's rest up and find out what interesting sights we can find tomorrow.
2/16/2023 part 2
Tucson brews
And a light dinner, the De La Tierra barrel-aged imperial stout for Derek, and the Meso, Galaxy, and Nelson Hops double IPA for me. Yummy stuff.

Great brews.

Snow in Boulder City, Nevada?
We've seen a bunch of snow this time wintering at Lake Mead NRA, mostly in the higher elevations of the Spring Mountain, Mount Charleston, but Boulder City? This is a first. Looks pretty but oh so cold as we drive up the hill for Valentine's Day dinner at 'The Tap' in Boulder City.
2/11/2023 part 1
Dallas here we come
We booked this trip just a couple days ago, ticket prices were great, so we're off!
2/11/2023 part 2
Spirit-ed travels
I don't recall flying with Spirit before, but Derek was able to bid on first class seats and we got them, so we're sitting in row 2, uuuuuuh! Snazzy big seats and before I know it, Derek is out cold in the seat next to me :) but I'm up and just looking out the window, enjoying the quickly changing scenery below us.
2/11/2023 part 3
Lunch with family
Derek's nephew and family pick us up at DFW and we head out for lunch at a newly opened restaurant, Velvet Taco in Grapevine. Not your regular standard tacos, and they are scrumptious.
2/11/2023 part 4
Velvet Taco, Grapevine, TX
They were as yummy as they look. Very unique flavor combinations!
2/11/2023 part 5
The reason for the trip
To pick up the Z, take it to Vegas and put it up for sale.
Pic was the day we bought it, a 2017 370Z, now just around 19000 miles and up for sale, interested?

2/11/2023  part 6
Vegas here we come
We leave Dallas just after we get a quick oil change on the Z. She's a delight to drive and purrrrrz so gently, cruising along at an easy 2500 rpms and hugging that 75 mph speed limit. It's gonna be a sad day when we sell 'er. We reach Amarillo, the stop for the night and a dinner at the Big Texan. One of our favorite stops when in Amarillo. No we did not attempt the 72oz steak challenge, ;) , you must google it, we just sat at the bar and ate our dinner. Time to turn in early and hit the road again tomorrow. We have a helluva drive ahead of us.
2/5/2023 part 1
Kingman Wash, AZ
A off-road trail we've been wanting to drive for a while now, well today is the day, Sunny but windy. This is about a 4-5 mile gravel road off of Interstate 11 in Arizona. 4x4 recommended but not necessary if you pay attention to the ruts, large rocks and puddles. Along the drive we've seen a motorcoach make it's way out there, now that would be a bit much for our rig and would not do that. But it was apparent that people were boondocking around the lake area.
2/5/2023 part 2
First look
Of Lake Mead that is, from a different angle. You can barely make out our campground from here. This is a small beach area which seems to be well known spot to fishermen.
2/5/2023 part 3
Peaceful time
We brought our chairs, a book and our dog. It's time to sit, relax, enjoy the lake and read while Derek is exploring the cove we're in and flying his drone until the wind gets too strong and threatened to carry the drone away. We're holding on to the chairs and lose things and the wind is really picking up.

Enzo seems to be content in his chairs, I think he's enjoying the much needed sunshine.

2/5/2023 part 4
The wildlife
Would've expected to see rams out here, but a wild burrow? Sure is. He was so beautiful and as I was clicking my tongue he started coming closer. I ended up staying away the recommended 25 yards, just like I would in a National Park so to not encroach on his area. He looked like such a gentle soul and immediately made me think of my friend Monsoon, my mule for the ride into the Grand Canyon to Phantom Ranch. Absolutely precious!
2/5/2023 part 5
Dinner
It's finally warm enough again to sit outside at BJ's, enjoy a brew and a burger..
2/5/2023 part 6
Sweet boy
Enzo gets to come along and thankfully he's allowed to sit at the table with us. Our little Bark Ranger is in a good spot.
1/28/2023 part 1
Lookout Tower
This is a must do if you're not quite sure where you want to go next. 553 feet high, you're sure to see it all on a gorgeous sunny day like today.
The view is absolutely exquisite.
We spent an hour and half up there, finding the buildings featured and described in front of the windows.

We quickly realized that there is so much to see and we only have today to explore.

1/28/2023 part 2
Vancouver Canada from above
See the train yard on the left? I could spend a day up here watching the trains come and go.
1/28/2023 part 3
Canada Place
Viewed from Vancouver Lookout Tower, this observation desk provides us a 360 degree view of the city.
1/28/2023 part 4
BC Place
Built in preparation for World Expo '86, BC Place owns the world's largest cable-supported retractable roof. The 55,000-seat structure was the largest air-supported dome-roof stadium in the world.
1/28/2023 part 5
A motorcycle?
It's being stored in this High-Rise building. Hmmm!?
1/28/2023 part 6
Martina's lunch at Steamworks Brewing
Brewhouse burger, hold the bun, double the bourbon bacon jam, yum, and a side of Poutine with the best I've ever tasted cheese curds!
1/28/2023 part 7
Derek's lunch at Steamworks Brewing
Brewer's Breakfast for Derek, looks yum yum too, doesn't it? He loved it.
1/28/2023 part 8
Steamworks Brewing
And the brews you ask? Phenomenal Imperial Stout. Go try it, you won't be disappointed.

1/28/2023 part 9
The Gastown Steamclock
Built in 1977, this beauty stands tall on Water Street.
It was built to cover a steam grate, part of Vancouver's distributes steam heating system as a way to harness the steam and a means of masking Central Heat's sidewalk steam vent at the corner of Water and Cambie Street.
The clock displays the time on four races and announces the quarter hours with a whistle chime that plays the Westminster Quarter. As you see here, the clock produces a puff of steam from its top on the hour.

1/28/2023 part 10
Artwork
Artwork is all over the downtown area. I especially like this wind sculpture. So pretty and calming as it moves in the wind.
1/28/2023 part 11
The Digital Orca
Located at Jack Poole Plaza, this sculpture depicts a killer whale created by black and white cubes.
1/27/2023 part 1
Tickets
We're off to Vancouver Island/Nanaimo by way of BC Ferries, Vancouver.
1/27/2023 part 2
O oh!
We dock at Snug Cove Terminal, what????
Yes indeed, they put us on the wrong ferry, we wait for passengers to unload, and after talking with the ferry staff, we ride back to BC Ferries terminal where we straighten out the tickets and are given free tickets to Vancouver Island and a voucher for a dinner on the ferry.
1/27/2023 part 3
Lunch
We wander through the streets, got plenty of time before the next ferry leaves, so we stop at The Troller Ale House, a waterfront pub for microbrews, where we share some gumbo to warm up.
1/27/2023 part 4
Ferry staff
This lady was apologizing for putting us on the wrong ferry, and she got Derek a tiny Schnaps bottle and a big cookie for his birthday.
And then she made sure we got to the correct ferry.
1/27/2023 part 5
There's Vancouver Island
Mid afternoon, we finally arrive at Vancouver Island.
1/27/2023 part 6
Look!
A lighthouse Bistro Pub and restaurant right on the river walk. Too bad we already had lunch and a free dinner to go to on the ferry ride back.
1/27/2023 part 7
Selfie Op
The Nanaimo sign makes for a great selfie spot.
1/27/2023 part 8
All that walking
Made us thirsty, so before catching the shuttle bus back to the ferry terminal, we make a quick stop at White Sails Brewing to sample some tasty brews.
1/27/2023 part 9
Vancouver Island Ferry Terminal
Back in time at the BC Ferry Terminal to do a little souvenir shopping and get on the ferry.
1/27/2023 part 10
Complementary Dinner
Courtesy of BC Ferries, The grilled chicken with broccoli and rice was fantastic. Hard to believe a ferry boat would make such delicious food.
1/26/2023 part 1
Derek's birthday weekend begins
Yes, when you get older, you'll start to take pictures of where the car's parked in the huge airport parking garage. :)
1/26/2023 part 2
Off we go
We made it through the long line to get boarding passes, pay for a seat (yes with FlairAir you buy a ticket but then at the time of check-in you have to pay for a seat, anywhere from $10 to $35), made it through security and reach the gate with plenty of time before boarding for our 10:25 flight.
1/26/2023 part 3
In flight 'movie'
Looking out the window, it feels like a National Geographic movie, leaving Las Vegas, flying over desert and rocks, then, within a short time we reach Washington state and fly over Mount Rainier. What a sight!
1/26/2023 part 4
Hello Vancouver
...nice to meet you!

We've reached the Vancouver airport and are about to get on the train to our hotel.

It's a scenic ride and we enjoy the first sights of the city. The connection from the train station to the hotel is just a short walk and the rain has stopped.

It's time to check in!

1/26/2023 part 5
Our hotel
The Hotel Belmont MGallery is a quirky renovated hotel on Nelson Street in the downtown Vancouver area. The room is spacious and clean and will be our little retreat for the next three nights.
1/26/2023 part 6
Our room
On the 5th floor, we just barely clear the adjacent buildings and have a great view of the downtown highrises.
1/26/2023 part 7
Roxyburger
Perogies for an appetizer followed by a delicious burger for Derek and a clam chowder to warm myself up from the inside out.
Sooooooo yummy!

This'll be a 5 star review in the Brews and Eats section!
1/26/2023 part 8
The birthday cake slice
Just when you think it can't get any more delicious they bring out the cheesecake with caramel drizzle. It was even more delicious than it looks.

That's all for today!
1/24/2023
The new window
Remember that time in Colorado, when the Jeep was broken into. Well, turned out that this little side window was not so easy to find and even harder to find someone to install it. But today, things came together for us. The window installer was super, had that new window in within 15 minutes.
1/22/2023 part 1
Spring Mountains National Recreation Area
Sunday mornings are for hiking and the sky looks perfect for playing in the snow.
1/22/2023 part 2
The Robbers Roost Trail
We drove in attempted to park and hike Mary Jane Falls, the reality is that when we got to the trailhead parking area, the entire parking are was full of 3-4 feet of snow. No parking at the trailhead, so we came here. It'll be a short hike, all uphill, but we get out anyway.
Derek's checking out the trail info. Always good to know the trail details before hand.
1/22/2023 part 3
And up we go!
There's Derek plowing thru the snow with snowshoes on and he's still sinking in. This was very loose powder snow and about the end of the trial, it was beautiful but time we turned around.
1/22/2023 part 4
Wild horses?
We saw these beauties on the way in but couldn't' turn around to take pictures. Very surprised to see them still there. They must be wild horses as no fences were to be found anywhere. We approach quietly and get a couple of shots before they bolt off.
1/22/2023 part 5
Springs Mountain NRA
The Spring Mountains National Recreation Area, west of Las Vegas, it covers over 316,000 acres. The area runs from low meadows, around 3,000 feet above sea level, to the 11,918 feet Mount Charleston.
1/22/2023 part 6
Jeep and ATV Roads
This is just one of the many Jeep roads and a pretty good spot to get the Jeep nice and muddy.
1/22/2023 part 7
The snow
It gives the otherwise monotone landscape this time of year a wonderful contrast. The blue sky and white clouds make colors really pop. A good day for landscape photos.
1/22/2023 part 8
Tule Springs Fossil Beds NM
Tule Springs was home to many small animals that inhabited cooler, wetter spring environments of the past. Rodents, birds, reptiles and amphibians were found in and around these spring habitats.
And another stamp for the Passport book.
1/22/2023 part 9
The Loop Trail
Not your typical trail to hike on, but after all, we're in the desert, so we go on a mile and a half hike on the trails where the prehistoric giants may have walked, some 12,500 to 100,000 years ago. The partial remains of extinct large mammals like mammoth, bisons, saber-toothed cat and dire wolf have been discovered.
1/22/2023 part 10
Eeeeek
Jeep's dirty enough for today, time to go home!
1/15/2023 part 1
Mountain Springs Trail
This 4.8 mile out-and-back trail, a challenging route, takes us up and up and some more up. Challenging for Derek who stubbed and cut his little toe on a door yesterday. But we push on and up.
1/15/2023 part 2
The landscape and plants
Certainly different and unusual but the snow covered mountains in the background add to the picture.
1/15/2023 part 3
Keep on
Climbing that is, as we reach the top of one of the ridges, as far as we decide to got, not the entire 2 1/2 miles but this will have to do. Winds are whipping sideways and with Derek's foot not being in the best shape we turn back early.
1/15/2023 part 4
 Zoom zoom zoom
That's the best my 240mm will do, but we can still see downtown Vegas pretty good in the distance. We head back to the car before more clouds (Rain? Snow?) start rolling over the hills.
1/14/2023
Backyard wildlife
Yes, we have a roadrunner who figured out that our songbird feed contains dried mealworms that the local birds don't really care for but seems to be a delicatessen for roadrunners.
So when the songbirds are done, he stops by and cleans up the leftovers and we're elated about that. Isn't nature just a wonderful thing to watch?
1/13/2023
Fox's
Our go-to for barbeque. My favorite, the smoked wings, they consistently come out the way I want them. Extra crispy with sauces on the side.
Happy Wednesday! Oh, and the real Wednesday special is ribeye, buy one get one half off, Derek's favorite.
1/12/2023
Locals
No we're not at the zoo, these are the locals. On my way back from Albertson's (grocery run), I stop these guys, they are locals who visit often. I drive back to the coach, unload groceries, grab my camera and head bac to photograph the herd. I could stay here and watch them all day. From a long distance away and with long glass ;)
1/10/2023
See what I mean?
Here we go again with another party in the sky.

We're starting to see the pattern, on stormy windy days, wait it out, grab the camera around 4ish pm, head out and wait for the colors. A photographer's dream! Thanks Lake Mead National Recreation Area.
1/8/2023 part 1
Sunday lunch
A quick trip to the local mall and Enzo in the backseat, then lunch at BJ's Brewhouse
Doesn't that Ahi Tuna Salad look devine? Let me tell you Derek's ribs and chili was just as delicious.
1/8/2023 part 2
Enzo too
Nice sunny day and 58*F allows us to sit outside on their dog friendly patio with Enzo.
Enzo always savors his ride in the Jeep and his time at the table. And we're thankful that BJ's allows us to bring him to the table and we appreciate that!
1/5/2023 part 1
Rain, rain go away
All day soaker rain, which is just what this water short area needed.

By the end of the work day, the clouds lift and the sun peeks through just in time for the sunset and a rainbow over Lake Mead.

1/5/2023 part 2
Another party...
...in the sky that is.
Amazing colors and clouds moving across the sky at such a fast pace. We sit in one of the parking lots and watch the sky change. It's something different every couple minutes and I'm happy with the pictures I capture.
1/5/2023 part 3
Dinner
Or so we hoped, but unfortunately the one restaurant in the marina that would normally be open today was closed for cleaning.
So we enjoyed this spectacular view  for a while, watching the lights of the planes approaching the Las Vegas airport, imagine the views from the plane, can't help but wonder if it was a bumpy ride.
Eventually we move on and back to the coach for some sandwiches.
